I thought that was a wonderful piece, until the very end, when the author seems to identify Christian life with the avoidance of drinking, dancing, and card-playing. He didn’t even say they were drunk, fornicating, or gambling.
The Chinese man’s consistency is an excellent example. However, it’s a stereotype of Christians that they get all worked up about minor, external elements, rather than the “big stuff.”
What about, “Me Christian. Me no steal. Me no lust. Me no oppress my workers,” etc.
This was written very likely in the late 1800’s, maybe the very early 1900’s.
That just goes along with the practice and thinking of the day.
At the name of JESUS every knee will bow.
Good last line, though.
