Iraqi-born US Priest Who Was Kidnapped There Returns as a Bishop

Mother of God Church in Southfield, Michigan

Two Iraqi-born Catholic priests who have been serving in the United States have returned to Baghdad to become bishops. One of them, who had once been kidnapped and beaten there by anti-Christian extremists, will be remaining in his native—and troubled—land.

Father Basel Yaldo, 44, a Chaldean Catholic priest who has been serving at Mother of God Church in Southfield, Michigan, and Chorbishop Emanuel Shaleta, pastor of St. George's parish in Shelby Township, both suburbs of Detroit, were ordained to the episcopate February 6 in Baghdad. Bishop Yaldo will serve as auxiliary bishop of the Chaldean Catholic Patriarchate of Babylon, heading the local Church in Baghdad when Patriarch Louis Raphael I Sako is away. Bishop Shaleta will head the Eparchy of Mar Addai in Toronto, Canada.

Kathy Schiffer writes at her Seasons of Grace blog at Patheos:

Nine years ago Father Basel was kidnapped in his native Iraq by anti-Christian extremists. For three days, he was beaten by his captors. After his release he continued to receive death threats, until finally in 2007 he was transferred to the United States for his own safety.

Father Yaldo told the Detroit Free Press that his 2006 kidnapping “brought me closer to God and strengthened my faith.  It also pushed me to be more serious and be more involved. Virgin Mary was the one who helped me when I was kidnapped, and I’m sure she will help me in Iraq.”

The episcopal ordinations come as a dispute continues between Patriarch Sako and several Iraqi priests serving in the United States. In the wake of the Islamic State group's takeover of areas in northern Iraq, traditionally home to Christians, the patriarch ordered many expatriate priests to return to be with the suffering Christians in Iraq. Some have resisted, citing the need to serve their burgeoning Chaldean communities in America.

Returning to Iraq also carries great risk, of course. Fareed Saka, a deacon at St. Peter's Chaldean Church in El Cajon, California, for example, speculated on the fate of one such priest, his pastor, Father Noel Gorgis, if he returns to Iraq: "He'll be killed in a day or two, kidnapped maybe," Deacon Saka told the Los Angeles Times.

For his part, Bishop Yaldo said he wants to “give people hope and to keep their faith alive,” when he takes up his new role. He also hopes to convince the Iraqi government to protect the Christians of Iraq.

If you genuinely want to understand the TRUE, VIOLENT, DUALISTIC, SCHIZOPHRENIC nature of ISLAM in order to become part of a solution instead of part of the problem that spells doom for Western Civilization (and, NO, that’s not too extreme a statement), you need to spend 40 minutes with Dr. Bill Warner here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjBDDC4wVxk

And this is ESPECIALLY for any antisemites who view the “Jewish Conspiracy” as the primary threat to your existence and are put off because the video was posted by a Jewish group.  Try to think of any nations conquered by violent, bloody Jewish jihad and send me their names.

After watching this presentation, if you STILL believe that Bush was correct when he called islam a “religion of peace” (it’s not a religion and it ain’t peaceful) and Obama was right when he recently declared islam morally equivalent or superior to the Christian Crusades, you are DEFINITELY a BIG part of the problem.

Gang, this is a WAR and it is one we dare not lose!

PLEASE SHARE THIS WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!

I should have said “Protect them” — I was not being sarcastic with my statement.

It’s interesting the way socialists approach theological concepts but when it comes to Islam they are not the only ones who refuse to approach the issue. That even includes leading Christian clergy including Pope Francis.

Followers of Mohammed not only claim, but truly believe that God has authorized them to kill those who refuse to submit to their version of God’s will. That is a basic tenet of that religion. A claim which goes unchallanged. While it’s understandable for atheists which most socialists are, not to approach that claim on a theological basis.

It’s bewildering why many Christian clergy refuse to admit it even exists and is a basic part of Islam creed and worse yet are unable to condem it as pure evil and cause its adhearants to question its existence .

The Koran which was not given to Mohammed by God but by some angel .Demanding enforcement of sharia law which draws heavily from the Torah. It is a pseudo religious concoction using monotheistic selected texts, taken and misconstrued from the old .(bible) and new tertaments. Both of which cite the Almighty has granted free will to accept or obey his laws and is the final judge not man. Sodom and Gormora , “Let he who is without sin cast the stone” are outstanding examples from both books. One deals with sin and God’s decision toward a group the other to an individual, neither is left to man.

Yet followers of Mohammed under the severest of penalties are forbidden to read either which would refute that assertion in a creed which institutionalizes disgusting arab tribal views, observances, and customs. Claiming adhearants are authorized by our Creator to demand submission to it or suffer an ignominious death administered by followers of Islam simply because they answer the call to prayer 5 times a day.

The Savages will separate his Handsome head from his shoulders unfortunately . He will become another martyr.

Meet Fr. Ragheed Ganni

In 2003, after finishing his studies in Rome, he decided to return to Iraq, his native country: "that is where I belong, that is my place". He also returned to help in the rebuilding of his nation, the rebuilding of a "free society". He spoke of an Iraq full of hope with a captivating smile: "Saddam has fallen, we have elected a government, we have voted for a Constitution!" He organized theology courses for the lay faithful of Mosul; he worked with the young; he consoled disadvantaged families; this month he was engrossed in helping a small child with serious eye problems undergo surgery in Rome.

"Without Sunday, without the Eucharist the Christians in Iraq cannot survive": that was how Fr Ragheed spoke of his community’s hope, a community that was used to facing death on a daily basis, that same death that yesterday afternoon faced him, on his way home from saying mass.

In 2007, after having fed his faithful with the Body and Blood of Christ, he gave his own blood, his own life for Iraq, for the future of his Church.

This young priest had willingly, knowingly chosen to remain by the side of his parishioners from Holy Spirit parish in Mosul, judged the most dangerous city after Baghdad. His reasoning was simple: without him, without its pastor, his flock would have been lost. In the barbarity of suicide attacks and bombings, one thing at least was clear, and gave him the strength to resist: "Christ”, Ragheed would say, “challenges evil with his infinite love, he keeps us united and through the Eucharist he gifts us life, which the terrorists are trying to take away".

Following mass on Trinity Sunday, a week after Pentecost Sunday, Father Ragheed and three sub-deacons were seized, taken away and murdered. Their killers placed vehicles loaded with explosives around the bodies so no one would dare approach them. Subdeacon Wahid Hanna Isho's wife, Bayan Adam Bella, in exile in Syria, was the only witness to the martyrdom.

"At a certain point, the car was stopped by armed men. Father Ragheed could have fled, but he did not want to because he knew they were looking for him. They forced us to get out of the car and led me away. Then one of the killers screamed at Father Ragheed, 'I told you to close the church. Why didn't you do it? Why are you still here?' And he simply responded, 'How can I close the house of God?' They immediately pushed him to the ground, and Father Ragheed had only enough time to gesture to me with his head that I should run away. Then they opened fire and killed all four of them. Why did they make me a widow? Why did they tear the word 'papa' from the mouths of my children? What did we do wrong? What did my husband do?"

Fr. Ragheed loved his people as does this priest. Neither one of them would abandon their parishioners. Please pray for him.
