They might as well. They’ve spent the past fifty years revoking everything they used to teach.

If you have a problem with Catholics posting articles, why don’t you take it up with the owner?

The problem i referred to was that RCs whining about opposition when they are the ones inviting it. The owner affirms the God of my Bible, but since it is manifestly you who have a problem with Prots opposing Catholics, why don’t you take it up with the owner?

Personally, I like these Papal Bulls. I think Europeans conquering the New World was a very good thing. As an American, I think you’d agree with that...or go back to your ancestors’ country.

But which does not answer my question.

Catholics rarely whine. You guys have the most thin-skins of any freepers I have ever known. You cry at the drop of a hat - just reference my original post to you which caused you to break into tears.

I LOVE these Papal Bulls. If you don’t, go back to the hellhole you’re ancestors came from.

Met mom - based on your posting, I hope you will agree to go back to what ever hellhole you and your ancestors came from.

All that Catholic love so just makes me want to swim the Tiber....

/s

FWIW, I was born and raised Catholic into a Catholic family running down both sides of the family. Had priests and a nun in my extended family.

I lived and worked and went to school in a very highly Catholic community. And yes, it was a hellhole....

Still is based on the politics of the area and the amount of corruption that exists in the government there.

Also, some of your Catholic cohorts keep telling me that I'm still Catholic.

If you don't like my posting, it must be that I've not shed all that upbringing yet.

My family came from both the Irish famine and the anti-Semitism of Poland. We’re happy to be here and thank God someone conquered the New World.

But the Catholic church has no authority to tell others to do it. It was not their place to give people permission for what to do and what not to do.

Did you happen to read these papal bulls that are being referenced? This looks like the same folks who are denouncing Columbus Day. All the evil European invaders.

Sublimus Dei

Pope Paul III (Topic: the enslavement and evangelization of Indians)

To all faithful Christians to whom this writing may come, health in Christ our Lord and the apostolic benediction.

The sublime God so loved the human race that He created man in such wise that he might participate, not only in the good that other creatures enjoy, but endowed him with capacity to attain to the inaccessible and invisible Supreme Good and behold it face to face; and since man, according to the testimony of the sacred scriptures, has been created to enjoy eternal life and happiness, which none may obtain save through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, it is necessary that he should possess the nature and faculties enabling him to receive that faith; and that whoever is thus endowed should be capable of receiving that same faith. Nor is it credible that any one should possess so little understanding as to desire the faith and yet be destitute of the most necessary faculty to enable him to receive it. Hence Christ, who is the Truth itself, that has never failed and can never fail, said to the preachers of the faith whom He chose for that office ‘Go ye and teach all nations.’ He said all, without exception, for all are capable of receiving the doctrines of the faith.

The enemy of the human race, who opposes all good deeds in order to bring men to destruction, beholding and envying this, invented a means never before heard of, by which he might hinder the preaching of God’s word of Salvation to the people: he inspired his satellites who, to please him, have not hesitated to publish abroad that the Indians of the West and the South, and other people of whom We have recent knowledge should be treated as dumb brutes created for our service, pretending that they are incapable of receiving the Catholic Faith.

We, who, though unworthy, exercise on earth the power of our Lord and seek with all our might to bring those sheep of His flock who are outside into the fold committed to our charge, consider, however, that the Indians are truly men and that they are not only capable of understanding the Catholic Faith but, according to our information, they desire exceedingly to receive it. Desiring to provide ample remedy for these evils, We define and declare by these Our letters, or by any translation thereof signed by any notary public and sealed with the seal of any ecclesiastical dignitary, to which the same credit shall be given as to the originals, that, notwithstanding whatever may have been or may be said to the contrary, the said Indians and all other people who may later be discovered by Christians, are by no means to be deprived of their liberty or the possession of their property, even though they be outside the faith of Jesus Christ; and that they may and should, freely and legitimately, enjoy their liberty and the possession of their property; nor should they be in any way enslaved; should the contrary happen, it shall be null and have no effect.

By virtue of Our apostolic authority We define and declare by these present letters, or by any translation thereof signed by any notary public and sealed with the seal of any ecclesiastical dignitary, which shall thus command the same obedience as the originals, that the said Indians and other peoples should be converted to the faith of Jesus Christ by preaching the word of God and by the example of good and holy living.

IMO, Columbus is just the heavy.

He’s getting blamed for everything whether he did it or not, and whether he was even alive for it or not.

What so many people fail to realize is that it it wasn’t Columbus, it would have been someone else.

Exploration was happening and the new world would have been found one way or another and one time or another.

And likely that guy would be taking the fall instead.

I agree. It’s all a part of the now popular teaching that the Europeans came to the New World, killed all the indigenous people, stole their land and enslaved them.

Popes are human and the Church gets some bad ones from time to time. Bad popes, however, do not affect the magisterium. They tend to not be much interested in the religion but more taken with the politics of the princess in Italy and Europe generally. We suffer such a one for the time he occupies the space.

It is amazing what RCs can imagine as needed. "Break into tears?" Are you on drugs, or did you forget to take your meds? Meanwhile, i can show you the multitudes of posts whining about anti-Catholics, while they live in denial of what provokes our opposition.

I LOVE these Papal Bulls. If you don’t, go back to the hellhole you’re ancestors came from.

So once again your avoid answering the question. Can you just tell me if you disagree with any of them, and if RCs can?

Metmom,

What the Catholic Church has done is much STRONGER than MERELY rescinding them. It has COUNTERED them with stronger statements to the contrary, directly REFUTING them, and issued DOCTRINAL statements condemning slavery.

You prove that no adult conversation can be possible; you know nothing on the topic, but as soon as someone gives you what you perceive to be an opening for attack, you take the attack.

The papal bull Sublimus Dei (1537) made doctrine sufficiently clear:

The exalted God loved the human race so much that He created man in such a condition that he was not only a sharer in good as are other creatures, but also that he would be able to reach and see face to face the inaccessible and invisible Supreme Good... Seeing this and envying it, the enemy of the human race, who always opposes all good men so that the race may perish, has thought up a way, unheard of before now, by which he might impede the saving word of God from being preached to the nations. He (Satan) has stirred up some of his allies who, desiring to satisfy their own avarice, are presuming to assert far and wide that the Indians...be reduced to our service like brute animals, under the pretext that they are lacking the Catholic faith. And they reduce them to slavery, treating them with afflictions they would scarcely use with brute animals... by our Apostolic Authority decree and declare by these present letters that the same Indians and all other peoples - even though they are outside the faith - ...should not be deprived of their liberty... Rather they are to be able to use and enjoy this liberty and this ownership of property freely and licitly, and are not to be reduced to slavery.

Pastorale Officum excommunicated anyone who stole property or enslaved Indians.

When Colonists in the Philippines nonetheless enslaved Philippinos, the Pope thus could demand reparations under the pain of excommunication; whatever decrees which may have applied to war prisoners (1545) were so obviously inapplicable to the Philippinos.
