Pope Says Three Catholic Phrases. Pollyannas Are Delighted.

In a very small whiff of fresh air in the stench in which we are living, Pope Francis has said two or three things which really sound Catholic. Look at the Patheos crowd delighting in being able to tell themselves the Pope is orthodox, after having waited 12 hours for the broken clock to show the right time.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s as bad as that: Francis must only say a couple of words vaguely resembling Catholicism every couple of months, and the enthusiastic following of the blind is assured to him.

The words aren’t even so strong, not by any standard of even V II Popes. From what I could read he does not give strong warnings, merely some words of encouragement on abortion, and some very veiled words against so-called “same sex marriage”. There is no mention of murder of the unborn, no mention of dangers for the soul. And it’s clear this Pope mentions dangers for the soul anytime this is convenient to his agenda (mafiosi, capitalists, or even honest churchgoers who are “dead inside”).

I have read no mention of “culture of death”; no mention of hell, Satan, punishment. He praises a very weak Pope, and shows even in his “strongest” moments he can’t manage to be stronger than Pope Paul VI in his lack of decisiveness and incisiveness, basically having one encyclical to show for 13 years of disastrous Pontificate.

The mention of so-called same-sex marriage is so veiled it can’t even be safely attributed to the topic, in another show of blatant Jesuitism.

Well, you better get used to it. He's busy selecting new cardinals who will elect the pope after him.

Apparently this pope appeals to the masses of Catholics...When the anti-Christ shows up and counterfeits Jesus, those people will believe he is the real thing...

Reminds me of a number if Catholic posters here. And then they point out the rare moments as "proof" that we so misunderstand him.

Actually, the really "cool" anti-Catholic folks will be leading the charge to follow the Anti-Christ.

The fact that they've already swallowed the lie of Self and Self Alone makes them easily manipulated as their rationalizing away and adopting as acceptable every single sin that society popularizes from denying the words of Christ Himself to infanticide.

Coming soon to the anti-Catholic message:
Catholics are haters because sodomy is no different than eating shellfish or bacon.

Pope strongly defends Catholic teaching against contraception

Manila, Philippines • Pope Francis issued his strongest defense yet of church teaching opposing artificial contraception, using a Friday rally in Asia's largest Catholic nation to urge families to be "sanctuaries of respect for life."

Francis also denounced the corruption that has plagued the Philippines for decades and urged officials to instead work to end its "scandalous" poverty and social inequalities during his first full day in Manila, where he received a rock star's welcome at every turn.

"Be sanctuaries of respect for life, proclaiming the sacredness of every human life from conception to natural death," Francis exhorted the crowd. "What a gift this would be to society if every Christian family lived fully its noble vocation."

Francis also urged families to be on guard against what he called "ideological colonization," an apparent reference to gay marriage, which isn't legal in the Philippines. The church opposes gay marriage, holding that marriage is only between man and wife.

Francis ... suggests Catholics should limit children

Excerpt:

At the same time, however, Francis made a statement that seems without precedent for a pope, suggesting that parents may have a responsibility to limit the number of their children, saying: "This does not signify that the Christian must make children in series."

Telling the story of a woman he met in a parish in Rome several months ago who had given birth to seven children via Cesarean section and was pregnant with an eighth, Francis asked: "Does she want to leave the seven orphans?"

"This is to tempt God," he said, adding later: "That is an irresponsibility." Catholics, the pope said, should speak of "responsible parenthood."

"How do we do this?" Francis asked. "With dialogue. Each person with his pastor seeks how to do that responsible parenthood."

"God gives you methods to be responsible," he continued. "Some think that -- excuse the word -- that in order to be good Catholics we have to be like rabbits. No."

"This is clear and that is why in the church there are marriage groups, there are experts in this matter, there are pastors," Francis said. Using the term for a practice that follows church law, he continued: "I know so many, many licit ways that have helped this."

A word of caution to my Catholic brothers and sisters: Having been immersed in protestantism since childhood, I am very familiar with the “we small (tiny) remnant are the only true Christians” thang.

It really doesn’t lead you anywhere good.

Pope Francis: “...Beware of the new ideological colonization that tries to destroy the family. It’s not born of the dream that we have from God and prayer – it comes from outside and that’s why I call it a colonization...”

This warning about “the new ideological colonization” is abstruse to say the least. Why would anyone consider such cryptic words a strong condemnation of “gay marriage”? And why would his reiteration of Church teaching regarding contraception be viewed as an indictment of media reports which have chronicled his less orthodox words and actions?

Understood. But who exactly are the "protestants" within the Church at this time? Are they those who maintain the same beliefs and practices as their Catholic predecessors, or are they those who are imposing novelties which objectively contradict the teachings and practices of the Church prior to Vatican II?

All I’m saying is that it is protestant thinking to substitute YOUR discernment or judgement for that of the Church.

Now, I grant you that events since 1962 and especially since the rise of the internet pose some unique difficulties for those with a Catholic formation. To profess that the Church has taught ALL the same things everywhere and always was easy when no one could know the documents of sixth-century councils in all particulars.

But I read a lot of Catholic blogs where the bloggers do with the documents (all 2000 years of them) of the Church what nutty protestants do with the Bible - picking and choosing, private interpretation, etc, etc.

Maybe Francis is an antipope. Maybe he isn’t. Perhaps he’s where he is for reasons not readily discerned by you or others.

But to discount the governance of the Church by the Holy Spirit because of something you don’t understand seems a shame. After all, that faith is the Catholic Advantage™.

I don't. But I do question the words and actions of particular individuals within the Church. It's impossible to deny that the actions of certain individuals (including popes) have been in direct contradiction to previous Church teachings.

This Pope is such a jerk. Doesn’t he know that modern medicine has gotten way out ahead of maternal mortality rates?

He is so damn ignorant!

My daughter had 6 C-sections..all perfectly normal healthy kids. She is in great shape.

What does an ignorant Argentinian Jesuit bachelor know about modern reproduction?
