Cardinal Burke Summoned for Papal Audience

(Rome) Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, Cardinal Patron of the Sovereign Order of Malta , was received on Thursday by Pope Francis in audience.

The American cardinal, born in 1948, was ordained a priest by Pope Paul VI after completing his theological studies at the Gregorian University in Rome in 1975 by Pope Paul VI. In the United States he was active in counseling and education, then completed a doctorate in canon law at the Gregorian University and returned in 1984 to the United States where he worked in pastoral care and as Vice-Chancellor of his home diocese in Wisconsin. Because of his reputation as an excellent canonist Pope John Paul II. brought him to Rome as defender of the bond of marriage in the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signatura in Rome.

In 1994 he was appointed bishop of his home diocese of La Crosse, 2003, then an appointment as Archbishop of St. Louis and in 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed him Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura in Rome and thus to the Dicastry Head of the Roman Curia.

On November 10, 2014, the Holy See Press Office announced in its day Bulletin that Cardinal Burke was replaced as Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura on November 8 and made Cardinal patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

The relatively young cardinal was thus removed as Dicastry Head, away from the Roman Curia and deported to a post of honor without a role in church leadership. This unusual degradation was already effective in September. Cardinal Burke himself made public the instructions.

Punishment and Removal from Church Leadership and Synod of Bishops

The American cardinal had, like no other Cardinal of the Catholic Church, expressed criticism in the past few months for the administration, gestures, decisions and statements of Pope Francis. As the Head of a Dicastry, Cardinal Burke was in office because of the Synod of Bishops on the family. There, the conflict came to a head when he openly spoke of "manipulation " and "betrayal" and accused Pope Francis in the way he handled controversial topics in the Synod of Bishops, "to have caused a lot of damage." In October 2015, there will be a second decisive part of the Synod of Bishops. Due to his distance from the Roman Curia, Cardinal Burke can not participate officially. Only the Pope himself could appoint him as a member of the synod, which is yet considered very unlikely. All observers, no matter what direction, saw the dismissal of a punishment of the Cardinal. Already in the fall of 2013, Pope Francis had severely curtailed the influence of the American Cardinal of his Church leadership by removing him from two congregations. Above all, Burke's influence on the appointment of bishops in the United States, which he had under Pope Benedict XVI, had been completely eliminated. Among the Cardinals, who opposed the defense of the marriage sacrament of the Kasper Group, Cardinal Burke was the real engine. Due to his removal from the Curia, orthodoxy would lose its dynamic head.

Just two months after the demotion, Pope Francis is to receive his critic. Prior to the drastic personnel decision, there was no discussion between the Pope and the Cardinal. Cardinal Francis had only granted one audience, which took place on 11 June-2013. The content of the yesterday's meeting is unknown.

Has Francis now muzzled Cardinal Burke as he has done the FOTI?

Yes, I thought that the excuse given for the resignation was that BXVI was ill, near death even. That was almost two years ago now.

I’m surprised you’re not pointing out the other translation/grammatical errors.

I know this is written in English but I don’t understand what it means.

Is Burke conservative?

Burke is one of those uppity Tea Party types who resist radical changes that diminish all in the name of trendy leftist whim.

We shall soon see.

If Francis continues to punish this guy there will be hell to pay.

Burke is the real deal

Wiki:

During the 2004 presidential election, Burke stated that he would not give the Eucharist to John Kerry or other Catholic politicians who publicly support legalized abortion.[52] He also wrote a pastoral letter saying Catholics should not vote for politicians who support abortion or other “anti-life” practices.[52] Burke later clarified his position, stating that one could vote for a pro-choice politician and not commit a mortal sin, if one believed there was a more significant moral issue than abortion at hand, but he also stated that he could not think of any sort of issue that would qualify.[53][citation needed]

In March 2009, Burke called on American bishops to withhold the Eucharist from Catholic politicians who support legalized abortion.[54] The bishops’ failure to do so, Burke said, “is weakening the faith of everyone. It’s giving the impression that it must be morally correct to support procured abortion.”[54] He also said that any president who promotes and implements “anti-life” legislation could be an “agent of death”.[54] Burke later said that he made his remarks not as Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, head of the Vatican’s highest court, but simply as an American bishop.[55]

In February 2013 Burke commented on the Irish abortion debate, stating that, in accordance with canon law, priests should exclude politicians who support abortion from receiving the Eucharist.[56]

In a September 2008 interview, Burke said that “the Democratic Party risks transforming itself definitively into a ‘party of death’, because of its choices on bioethical questions”, especially elective abortion.[57]

In May 2009, Burke stated, “Since President Obama clearly announced, during the election campaign, his anti-life and anti-family agenda, a Catholic who knew his agenda regarding, for example, procured abortion, embryonic-stem-cell research, and same-sex marriage, could not have voted for him with a clear conscience.”[58]

And better yet, he is Catholic and believes in upholding Catholic moral principles (not all of which coincide with Francis’ Big Mercy Tent Welcoming Committee — Come on in we’ll worry about the sinful stuff later).

That’s kind of what I thought.

I’m not a Catholic, but it’s going to be interesting to see what kind of stance the church is going to take, anti-abortion, or pro-abortion?

All I know is Burke should be Pope instead of this Argentinean weirdo.

Perhaps he someday may be.

If at all.

In Burke's tent, by contrast, all sinners are welcome -- but repentance has to be on the menu.

The Church will continue to be against abortion, Francis is on the right side on that issue.

He also had this to say in 2010 about proposed homo marriage legislation in Argentina:

“Let’s not be naive: This is not a simple political fight; it is a destructive proposal to God’s plan. This is not a mere legislative proposal (that’s just its form), but a move by the father of lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God ... Let’s look to St. Joseph, Mary, and the Child to ask fervently that they defend the Argentine family in this moment... May they support, defend, and accompany us in this war of God.

From Wiki:

On 5 January 2014, the Vatican denied that the Pontiff supports gay unions.[364] In response to various Italian tabloid articles released in the media, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi cited that various media misinterpretations are “paradoxical” and manipulative in misusing Pope Francis’ words noted in response to children growing up in non-traditional families.[16][365]

Should be an interesting next couple of months.

He also had this to say in 2010 about proposed homo marriage legislation in Argentina:

But now he has achieved his goal and he is Bishop of Rome. Despite being voted down by a quorum of bishops, Francis ordered the following to be published:

Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community: are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a fraternal space in our communities? Often they wish to encounter a Church that offers them a welcoming home. Are our communities capable of providing that, accepting and valuing their sexual orientation, without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony?

Without denying the moral problems connected to homosexual unions it has to be noted that there are cases in which mutual aid to the point of sacrifice constitutes a precious support in the life of the partners.
