I lived in Israel for two years. It is an astonishing place. In the United States, we preserve every site of historic value. In the Middle East, the people are living on top of history, or it is in the field such as Herod's pillars or Roman pillars.
Also, there are numerous buildings along with castles that over periods of 200 years were built up as removing the earth (shifting sands of time) was not worth the effort; therefore you might have a wall with three levels of doors and three levels of stone as the building "grew" up over time.

I never thought of that as a “trial”. Didn’t last long enough for the term, even as a joke. Joan of Arc had a “trial”.
