High school students rally for life at Planned Parenthood

About 80 high school students braved bitterly cold winds Tuesday morning for a pro-life gathering outside Lincoln’s Planned Parenthood.

Most of them came from high schools in Beloit and Tipton in Kansas, but about 25 Lincoln Pius X students joined the event planned by students at St. John’s Catholic High School in Beloit.

Patrick Eilert, a senior at St. John's, said the school has been traveling to the nearest abortion clinic for “peaceful protest and prayer” for the past six years and last year decided to try to get other high schools around the nation involved.

“We’re trying to give witness,” he said. “We’re the pro-life generation, and we don’t like this.”

Last year, the Kansas students protested outside a clinic in Wichita. This year they picked the clinic in Lincoln at 5631 S. 48th St., which includes abortion among the services it offers.

Nebraska Lt. Gov.-elect Mike Foley and Diocese of Lincoln Bishop James Conley spoke to the students at Cathedral of the Risen Christ.

Eilert said they chose the Lincoln clinic because there’s an active pro-life movement here, and to branch out to a new location.

The Rev. Jon Haschke, who teaches freshman religion at Pius X and is the associate pro-life director for the Lincoln diocese, said he got an email about the event and let students know.

The school has a pro-life group, and students regularly go to Planned Parenthood to pray, he said.

Pius X sophomore Emily O’Gara joined the line on the sidewalk along South 48th Street Tuesday morning, holding a sign and singing outside the clinic. She said this was a bigger group than normal because of the Kansas contingent.

“I’m in the pro-life club,” she said. “I think abortion is wrong, and we need to stop it.”
