Praying to the stone idol in Mecca? Really?If the Pope is in Istanbul and facing east, he would figuratively be looking at Samarkand, then beyond to Beijing, then further beyond to Morioka. To face Mecca, he would have to look SSE. Of course, it's Yahoo! News, so they may have gotten the compass direction wrong.

No. Mecca is in Saudi Arabia. The Blue Mosque is in Turkey. The Pope folded his hands in prayer over his pectoral cross (that's the cross he wears in front) and prayed silently for two minutes to Jesus Christ Our Lord.
Because that's Who Catholics pray to. You know that.
