Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Why were Tax Collectors so despised? First of all, they worked for an Oppressive, Occupying, Illegitimate Government, and against their Own People. They skimmed money off the top and charged ridiculous rates to the people for the "privilege" of being "Robbed". If that wasn't bad enough, they were engaging in Idolatry, because the money that was required to pay the taxes was foreign money with the images of a false god stamped upon it.

When the IRS Scandal first came to our attention, a Talk Show Host remarked that ordinary Americans have never been afraid of the Police if they did not engage in crime. Americans have never been afraid of our Military, of The FBI, or even the CIA, if they were just leading a normal life.

However, it seems that EVERY American fears one agency, an agency that can take away your money, your possessions, your business, and even your Home without Due Process. Even during times when that Agency is above corruption and scandal, even when a person has done everything correctly to the best of his ability, and even if one spends a huge amount of money to make sure everything is correct and accounted for, many Americans still tremble when seeing the return address of this agency in their mailbox. Now, with the scandal that has rocked the IRS, we can understand even more fully the position of the "Publican", and why the Call of Matthew was such an earth-shattering event.
