Intelligence-Gathering during wartime has an Ancient tradition. Both Moses and Joshua sent spies into enemy territory in order to gauge the enemy's strengths and weaknesses. It is important for a spy to give accurate and complete information, untainted by his own agenda or fears. Of the 12 Spies that Moses sent into the Promised Land, 10 allowed their fears to spoil their report. It was this lack of faith and breach of obedience that caused the Israelites to wander in the desert for another 40 years!

Mata Hari was a famous spy from WW1. Her impact upon the war effort was negligible, but she still suffered the supreme penalty for spying...death.

The History of spying became fascinating in WW2. The Enigma Machine, The breaking of Japanese Codes, The Navaho Code Talkers, The Foundation of the OSS (Later the CIA), and other Spy Stories can fill volumes!

With the advent of the Atomic Bomb, spies became part of our identity and culture. James Bond, Spy-VS-Spy, and the "Spy Novel" became our daily fare, but were no match for the reality of The Fuchs Case, The Rosenbergs, The Verona Papers, and the Aldrich Case.

Industrial Spying, as well as the theft of Intellectual Property has changed the way of doing Global business.

Now, perhaps the worst thing is that Government has become less concerned about spying on the ENEMY, but has turned inward to spy upon its Own People.

And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
