Columbus was used of God to begin a new era. However, the Catholic exploration of the new worlds was characterized by bloodshed and conquest. It left us with a “third world” Latin America.

The Reformers settling in North America was quite different and has led to the United States of America which has transformed the world for good in many, many ways. Discovery necessarily precedes settlement. To me Columbus Day is less about Columbus and more about the “New World” dawning in the consciousness of Europe in a timely fashion for the Reformation.
