Bishop Blase Cupich, a moderate who has called for civility in the culture wars and has embraced Pope Francis' focus on fighting poverty, will be named the next archbishop of Chicago, The Associated Press has learned.
Cupich will succeed Cardinal Francis George...
The pope's choice for Chicago has been closely watched as his first major appointment in the U.S., and the clearest indication yet of the direction he will steer American church leaders. Cupich is a moderate and is not among U.S. Roman Catholic bishops who have taken a harder line on hot-button issues. Francis has called for a greater focus on mercy and compassion instead of divisive social issues.

What will he do about Father Michael Pfleger? Promote him to Papal Nuncio or Monsignor?
Nah. He’ll get Francis to ordain him an auxiliary bishop.
I’m sorry to hear this (but not surprised). Chicago needed somebody good and instead they got someone who sounds not only like a spineless leftist, but kind of mediocre. As are most spineless leftists.
You got to be kidding me. Once again Pope Francis shows he has no room for orthodox conservatives in the Catholic Church.
Here’s a little story about the liberal Cupich. Cardinal George was a great defender of the faith. Cupich is anything but.

One thing to remember is that people can and do change when they get these high-visibility posts. Let us recall some of our reactions when other high-visibility posts were filled by supposed "good bishops":
For example, here was some of our reaction when Gomez went to Los Angeles:Yes, an earlier article said that the new Archbishop is a member of Opus Dei. Still is, presumably, since its not something he would need to retire from.
Opus Dei was given the villains role in the da Vinci Code because liberals who attack or undermine the Church hate Opus Dei.
So happy for our brothers and sisters in LA! Let the healing begin!!!!
Your liberation theology wont come from Archbishop Gomez. Read the bottom links about him. Very conservative. Be happy!
Or how about when Cardinal Dolan took over New York:
Archbishop Dolan spoke of his trepidation at accepting this new post. He maintained this theme of Jesus knocking, saying he opened the door slightly, but left the chain on :-) He couldn't close the door because the Lord already had his foot wedged between the door and the jam.
He's quite the cut up but much of this fluff is to engage the listener and then draw them deeper into the message. He quoted from JPII's speech at the UN and Benedict's homily at his installation. One gets the feeling this Irishman will not stand for any guff and means business. We desperately need someone of his character here in NY. Of all the bishops who have spoken out against Obama's invitation to NDU, not ONE bishop from NY is on the list, except for Archbishop Dolan, who will be formally installed tomorrow.
Such tenderness, though, for his 2nd grade teacher and the lesson she taught him. The Archbishop just turned 59. God bless those nuns that taught him! He will need to draw strength from their lessons.

**Dont be surprised if Dolan shoots the first arrow. **
I wouldnt be surprised if Archbishop Dolan asked to talk with Paterson before Mass and explain to him that he could not give the governor Communion due to his stand on gay marriage politics.
Based upon what they had done in their past dioceses, these two appeared to be very orthodox. Those of us who had positive things to say about both of these two were absolutely correct in thinking that they would continue on in that manner in their new, high-visibility postings. But they both changed once they got there, didn't they?
The point is that I have no idea what this guy is going to do once he is installed as Archbishop of Chicago. I am certain that all bishops, particularly those who are very visible, are under a huge amount of spiritual attack daily. And they are in need of a huge amount of prayer, both from within their dioceses AND, because of their national/international visibility, from all of us. Both for the souls of the people in the flocks they shepherd, but also for the state of their own souls.
So I would encourage prayers of intercession, particularly the Rosary, for this new Archbishop of Chicago, Cupich. He is going to need them.
Cupich will not be missed by pro-lifers in Spokane. He’s the polar opposite of Cardinal George.
Good points all.
Everything I’ve ever heard about him is bad. Ordered all kneelers ripped out when he was bishop of Rapid City. A vicious bully. Is totally in favor of sacrilegious Communion for pro-aborts.
Pray the the early retirement or death of this Pope. He is totally a tool of O’Malley, Dolan, and Wuerl.
Yes. The acquisition of greater power in the Church DOES change men. The lukewarm are corrupted, and the bad become thoroughly evil.
Cupich is already evil. He is a vicious bully. He is anti-pro-life. He ordered all kneelers ripped out in the Diocese or Rapid City.
Fr. Pfleger will be dancing around the altar at his Masses even more flamboyantly than he already does.
Read about his politicking here.
