This contradiction was laid bare recently when the Holy See, acting in secret, threw the protective cloak of diplomatic immunity over Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski the papal nuncio in the Dominican Republic and an alleged serial abuser of minors. In a show of toughness, church officials defrocked Wesolowski and promised to try him according to the laws of Vatican City. In effect, though, church officials once again shielded a predator priest from civil jurisdiction.

Sharia Law, though, is perfectly fine.

Your biases are getting the better of your logic and reasoning.
James Carroll is an extreme liberal thinks the New Testament is inherently anti-Semitic. Just thought you’d like to know who you’re linking to.
Every church has a history of this. Its just that the RC is conservative and therefore a Target.
Don't let your bias hit you where the good Lord split you.
Diplomatic immunity is as appropriate in this situation as for any foreign minister. He should be brought home and prosecuted in his sponsoring country. Going back to the title... do you think we should remove the statehood of every country where a foreign minister commits crimes?
Any population has deviants. Period.
It is wrong for the Church to be protecting anyone involved in such heinous activities. On the other side of this is this is not only a pedophilia issue, it usually involved homosexuality as well. Something that our society seems to want to legitimize.
Can we revoke the statehood of the U.S. and the bulk of western Europe on the same grounds?
Who is protecting criminals? It isn't the Vatican... Vatican Laicizes Archbishop Josef Wesolowski for Sex Abuse of Minors. It's nearly every government around the world--including our own. The Vatican is one state that takes things seriously.
Apparently, the RC Church is evil, because they’re putting the trial and verdict before the sentencing. Perhaps some people have mistaken the Pope for the Queen of Hearts ...
Perhaps James Carroll isn’t an honest broker ... and the Boston Glob is part of Leftist Big Media, and should be given the same credibility as the New York Slimes, the Washington Pest, and the Communist News Network.
Naaaaahhhhh ...
The Vatican stripped Wesolowski of his diplomatic immunity last week ...

Hmmm, is not the property upon which the Globe sits worth more than their joke of a paper?
Sorry, Globe, but the only folks out there with less credibility than you live in the White House.
I found out a few years ago that the priest who married my wife and I was defrocked. His crime? He became involved with a WOMAN.
I couldn’t help but think if it were only decade or two ago, and he got caught molesting some of the altar boys, the Church would have simply covered it up and transferred him to another parish.
The Church really does need to rethink its policy on compulsory clerical celibacy. There is NOTHING in the Bible mandating such a draconian policy. To the contrary, the Bible permits married priests in both the Old Testament and the New testament.
They are protecting him because he is an ambassador. Diplomatic immunity is an old legal term dating back thousands of years.
The issue is that it becomes license. Look at the behavior of some of the UN delegates for example.
So how do you abolish statehood for another country?
The majority of ‘priests’ who where involved in this scandal where not raping preteen children, they are not pedophiles. They where involved in the seduction and abuse of pubescent boys. The same type of body that a vast majority of homosexuals desire. The entire youth worshiping live for today illness that is Homosexuality is at play.

For a host of reasons I believe Vatican statehood is wrong. However, who has the authority to abolish Vatican statehood and how would they go about it? Would someone seriously propose using a military force to take over and occupy the Vatican in this day and age? We are more likely to see NATO forces defending the Vatican against Islamic terror.
