Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Animals In The Bible
Ox
New International Version (NIV)
7 And he took a yoke of oxen and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the regions of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent
(1 Samuel 11:7)
3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, that was at Gibeah; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart. 4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which wasat Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God; and Ahio went before the ark.
5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps and on psalteries, and on timbrels and on cornets, and on cymbals.
6 And when they came to Nachons threshing floor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen shook it.
7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.
(2 Samuel 6:6)
19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, he said, and then I will come with you.
Go back, Elijah replied. What have I done to you?
21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.
(1 Kings 19:20)
Look at Behemoth,
which I made along with you
and which feeds on grass like an ox.
(Job 40:15)
2 Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth!
For the Lord has spoken:
I reared children and brought them up,
but they have rebelled against me.
3 The ox knows its master,
the donkey its owners manger,
but Israel does not know,
my people do not understand.
(Isaiah 1:3)
10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle.
(Ezekiel 1:10)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
In Proverbs, Solomon said:
An empty barn is a clean barn,
But great is the strength of the ox.
Oxen have been Beasts of Burden at least since 4000B.C., and were usually castrated males of the local cattle. They were painstakingly trained, and would respond to verbal commands. Being much stronger than a horse, and built in such a way as to be easily yoked at the shoulder, Oxen were appropriate for many tasks, and were extremely valuable. The killing of an ox would provide lots of meat for the community, but would entail a great sacrifice as well.
In the story of Uzzah, the sin was not merely touching the Ark of the Covenant. The sin was carrying it in an ox-cart, as if it were a load of produce. The Ark was supposed to be carried by Levites in a very reverend manner. The ox-cart was a common and mundane way of hauling things around.
Another interesting Scripture about the ox is the Law in the Torah:
You shall not muzzle the ox while he is treading out the corn."
There is more to this than forbidding cruelty to animals! This is an admonition against slavery, and against mistreating the people who work for us. The ox is threshing the grain to produce food, and yet he can't eat any of it if he is muzzled. There are deeper meanings to all the Laws that may seem on the surface to be speaking about ancient agriculture!
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
