In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea. (Isaiah 27:1)


It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan     and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(Psalm 74:143)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

For Centuries, Scholars have disagreed on the identity of Leviathan.

Herman Melville speculated that it was a Sperm Whale, like Moby Dick.

Those who believe in a "Young Earth" speculate that it was a Plesiosaur.

Medieval Artists painted it as a Sea Dragon, and the fear of it was one of the things Christopher Columbus had to deal with while preparing for his voyage.

Talmudic Sages speculate that Leviathan, having fins and scales, is kosher, and the Legend arose that God slew the leviathan and will be serving it in the Great Feast of the Righteous at the End of Days. Christians also speak of a Great Feast, called The Marriage Supper of the Lamb, but the menu has not been discussed. I am hoping it might be Leviathan, because I like sushi a lot!

Please, when you see the Arabic "Nun" symbol, let it be a reminder to pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Iraq, Syria, and Africa. Thank You.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far;
The LORD hath called me from the womb;
From the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.
(Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Prayers up

Was reading Job recently and thought what it had to say about leviathan was interesting. According to the Bible (With God speaking here),

"No one is fierce enough to rouse it"

It has a tough thick hide:

"Who can penetrate its double coat of armor?
[Its scales] are joined fast to one another;
they cling together and cannot be parted"

God tells us multiple times that it breathes flame:

"Its snorting throws out flashes of light;
its eyes are like the rays of dawn.
Flames stream from its mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.
Smoke pours from its nostrils
as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
Its breath sets coals ablaze,
and flames dart from its mouth"

It is extrememly strong and tough:

"The sword that reaches it has no effect,
nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.
Iron it treats like straw
and bronze like rotten wood"

Sounds to me like a sort of Sea dragon. Perhaps some of those old stories about dragons had some basis in fact. Maybe some of those old maps that warn "And here be Sea Serpents" were not totally off base. Just a thought.
