Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Animals In The Bible
Dogs
New International Version (NIV)
5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink. (Judges 7:5)
23 And of Jezebel also spoke the Lord, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.(1 Kings 21)
4 Anyone who is among the living has hope[a]even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!(Ecclesiastes 9:4)
26 He replied, It is not right to take the childrens bread and toss it to the dogs.
27 Yes it is, Lord, she said. Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table.(Matthew 15:26-27)
20"And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22"Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
(Luke 16:21)
17 These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravityfor people are slaves to whatever has mastered them. 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22 Of them the proverbs are true: A dog returns to its vomit,[g] and, A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.(2 Peter 2:22)
15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.(Revelation 22:15)

He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye.”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
In the Ancient World, Dogs did not have the beloved status that they enjoy now. That being said, let's examine the different aspects of Dogs in the Bible.
In the Story of Gideon, God wants to weed out Gideon's Army so that a tiny remnant will defeat a huge enemy. One of God's ways of eliminating extra soldiers was to observe how they drank water. If they stuck their face down in the water to drink, like a dog would, they were not being vigilant like those who scooped water with their hands. It was a very wise thing to remove those soldiers who would let their guard down in this way.
In the next story, Jezebel, who is a vile queen and an enemy of God, is told that she is going to die, and that dogs will eat her. Sure enough, later, she is thrown off the city wall and the wild dogs lick her blood off the ground. Certainly, not a nice way to die, but even worse is the humiliation of being food for scavengers.
The quote form Ecclesiastes can be paraphrased as "Discretion is the better part of Valor". Sometimes, being bold as a lion without discretion can get us killed! So perhaps this passage equates a "Live Dog" with the ability and wisdom to keep one's mouth shut on certain occasions!
Now we come to my favorite "Dog" Scripture. When Jesus calls the Syro-Phoenecian Woman a "Dog", He is merely using a common Aramaic Term for "Gentile". Instead of taking offense, the Woman realizes that Jesus has come for the Jews rather than her own race. Wisely, and with a sense of humor that cuts across centuries and cultures, she responds that "Even the dogs get the crumbs that fall from the Master's Table". As I sit and type this, Lynn-Dah, my Black Lab, is sitting at my feet, hoping to catch a few crumbs of my breakfast. Lynn-Dah is well fed, but there is something about those little morsels that are special, because they are from ME. The Woman knew that, even though she was a gentile, Jesus WOULD help her. And He most certainly did. Her brilliant answer about dogs was the signal to the world that Jesus had come for ALL of us.
In 2 Peter, the Author uses the illustration of a dog returning to his vomit to describe someone who has tasted of the goodness of God's salvation, and yet returns to his sinful ways. Peter could not have picked a more disgusting metaphor! But he sure does make a point!
Lastly, in Revelation, is the word "dog" as someone who will not be in heaven. Since all the other sinners on the list are humans, it is obvious that John of Patmos is NOT talking about the four-legged variety of dogs. It is theorized that the "dogs" here are either sodomites or male prostitutes (common in the pagan world). Some translations even state it overtly. In any case, I KNOW it's not a reference to Lynn-Dah! (LOL)
