Of Christ Among Us and "RENEW" fame. The archetypal "Jadot Bishop."

I think the comments here are a bit over the top. It appears he was too liberal for some folks here. I suspect he would be seen as down right conservative by today’s standards.

From Wiki:
Peter Leo Gerety (born July 19, 1912) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was Archbishop of Newark from 1974 to 1986, having previously served as Bishop of Portland [Maine] (1969–74). At age 101, he is currently the oldest living Catholic bishop in the United States and the oldest living Catholic archbishop in the world.

During his tenure in Portland, he implemented the reforms of the Second Vatican Council by modernizing the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, giving it a more modern appearance by removing the high altar, cathedra, pulpit, and communion rail. . .

In 1969, Gerety led an unsuccessful campaign against a bill in the state legislature to legalize abortions under certain circumstances. That same year, he called on Maine food retailers to stop selling California grapes in support of the farm workers’ dispute with growers. He was one of 14 bishops in New England to sign a statement in 1973 endorsing a boycott of California-grown lettuce in similar dispute. He also defended the rights of conscientious objectors during the Vietnam War and appealed to the Maine congressional delegation to modify the Selective Service Act.

My mother was involved in the farm workers boycotts here in Maine and even dragged me out to some protests.

From the Internet:

Jean Jadot, despite his father's opposition, entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Mechelen, and was ordained to the priesthood by Jozef-Ernest Cardinal van Roey on 11 February 1934.

On 23 February 1968, he was appointed titular archbishop of Zuri as well as the apostolic delegate to Laos, Singapore and Malaysia. He was ordained a bishop by Leo Cardinal Suenens on 1 May 1968.

He was appointed apostolic pro-nuncio to Thailand 28 August 1969. On 15 May 1971, Jadot was appointed apostolic pro-nuncio to Gabon and Cameroon as well as apostolic delegate to Equatorial Guinea. On 23 May 1973 he was appointed the apostolic delegate to the United States and would hold the position until 27 June 1980, when he was appointed as the Pro-President of the Secretariat of Non-Christians. He held the latter position until his retirement on 8 April 1984.

Jadot was considered a progressive leader in the American Church and was at times polarizing in the statements he made and decisions he took. Jadot was seen favorably by the Vatican under Pope Paul VI, who rejected Jadot's initial offer to resign. Paul's second successor, Pope John Paul II, accepted Jadot's subsequent resignation in 1980.

It is quite well known that especially under John Paul II Jadot's progressive views were the main obstacle for him to be made a cardinal.

Jadot died in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Belgium, on 21 January 2009.

I don't read "heretic" here. If he had been he would
*not have been made a bishop,
**would not have served so many posts, and
***would have been "retired" very, very early in his pastoral career.

The Second Vatican Council mandated, or suggested, NO changes in the arrangement of the sanctuary of any Catholic church. That it did is a myth--a lie.

What does this tell you about Peter Gerety?

“Under his leadership, the Cathedral has, as Bishop McQuaid predicted, opened its doors to the world. This statement can best be exemplified in a precedent-shattering ceremony in which John Shelby Spong was consecrated in the Cathedral sanctuary Coadjutor Bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. This historic event took place, at Archbishop Gerety’s invitation, on June 12, 1976. The Cathedral was filled to capacity, and thunderous applause echoed through the great nave as Archbishop Gerety embraced the consecrating prelate, the Right Reverend John Maury Allin, Presiding Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America.” - This is from the website of the Archdiocese of Newark - TODAY (in the Cathedral section).

Peter Gerety was quietly asked by Rome to withdraw his imprimateur from “Christ Among Us”, and when he refused, then-Cardinal Ratzinger publicly forced him to do so - this was featured in Time magazine (”Purifying Heat from Rome - May 7, 1984).

He stepped down before reaching 75, with the excuse given that he had health issues - yet he is the oldest living bishop today (and he had remained active for years after his “retirement”).

His fans never wavered in their support of him, but most of them long ago met God.

Nothing "over the top" about the comments here. The guy was a complete disaster as the Archbishop of Newark.

The "heretic" comment relates specifically to the removal of his imprimatur from the book Christ Among Us.

And from a purely objective sense -- aside from any religious considerations -- the physical changes he implemented in church buildings demonstrated an utter lack of respect for the hard-working parishioners in these churches. In many cases the "renovations" were done just a few years after these parishioners had contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to build the churches in the first place.

I don't know about his tenure in Maine, but here in the Archdiocese of Newark a lot of good, decent Catholics uttered a loud "Good riddance!" to the guy when he was forced into early retirement back in the 1980s.
