How the oppressor has come to an end! How his fury has ended! The LORD has broken the rod of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, which in anger struck down peoples with unceasing blows, and in fury subdued nations with relentless aggression. All the lands are at rest and at peace; they break into singing. Even the pine trees and the cedars of Lebanon exult over you and say, “Now that you have been laid low, no woodsman comes to cut us down.”

The grave below is all astir to meet you at your coming; it rouses the spirits of the departed to greet you - all those who were leaders in the world; it makes them rise from their thrones - all those who were kings over the nations. They will all respond, they will say to you, “You also have become weak, as we are; you have become like us.” (Isaiah 14:4a-10)

Holy God, we come in the Name of Jesus and pray to You.

Lord, we thank You for those men who have, from the very beginning of our nation, served it and fought for it. We thank You especially for the men who fought the Revolutionary War through the hardest, most hopeless days.

Father, we thank You for America, for all the freedom, peace, and prosperity You have given us. Let our hearts not be proud, but turn to You in gratitude and reliance.

LORD, You break the rod of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, which in anger struck down peoples with unceasing blows, and in fury subdued nations with relentless aggression. You bring the oppressor and his fury to an end. All the conquerors and the tyrants go down into the grave; all the leaders in the world and the kings over the nations become weak. But You are King forever, the Sovereign everlastingly, and Your scepter is a scepter of justice. When the last oppressor is broken and the last empire falls, Your kingdom will be established in heaven and on earth. All the lands, at rest and at peace, will break into singing, and even the pine trees and the cedars of Lebanon will exult. We praise You, the King of kings and Lord of lords, and pray that we may come into Your kingdom, in the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
