From a hardworking and physically resilient stature since accepting the post in March 2013, Pope Francis has decided to take a breather from his demanding job to cancel all his audiences and daily masses in the month of July.

The Vatican's official news service on Monday announced the 77-year-old Argentinean spiritual leader of the 1.2-billion strong Roman Catholic church has suspended his popular Wednesday audiences in July, including his daily Mass at the Casa Santa Marta where he lives. The latter will be suspended till August.

No news. From 2013:

The Prefecture of the Papal Household has released Pope Francis' agenda for the summer period, from July through to the end of August. Briefing journalists, Holy See Press Office director, Fr. Federico Lombardi confirmed that the Pope will remain 'based ' at the Casa Santa Marta residence in Vatican City State for the duration of the summer.

As per tradition, all private and special audiences are suspended for the duration of the summer. The Holy Father's private Masses with employees will end July 7 and resume in September. The Wednesday general audiences are suspended for the month of July to resume August 7 at the Vatican.

And from this year:

The Holy See Press Office published further information on the Pope's engagements during the months of July and August 2014.

During the month of July, all Wednesday general audiences will be suspended. They will resume on the first Wednesday of August in the Vatican, taking place on 6, 20 and 27 August.

On Wednesday, 13 August, there will be no general audience as the Pope will travel to Korea (from 13 to 18 August).

The Angelus prayer will continue to take place in the Vatican every Sunday in July, except during the days of the Holy Father's absence during his trip to Korea (Sundays 15 and 17 August).

The morning mass at the Domus Sanctae Marthae will be suspended during the summer, from early July until the end of August, and will resume at the beginning of September.

Look familiar?

Happens every year.

Why July?

I mean most of the world (except us) takes August off.

Does he want to beat the rush?

Papa Bennie to come out of retirement, reveal the corrupt bargain that tossed him off the Throne of Peter and drive the lavander mafia from the curia.

Oh, excuse me. I was day-dreaming.

Why July?

Well, maybe that is a little charity for the people who are at the place where he would be visiting...again if he went on a vacation. People who would normally be on vacation in August might need to cancel their plans if the Holy Father was to visit...in July, his vacation would cause far less impact to an area than during August.

Having said that, though, as long as I can remember, Popes have always been away from Rome in July and August. Other than the time that they would be on "vacation" (if one is taken at all), they spent the remainder of the time in Castel Gandolfo.

(Of course, there are notable exceptions, like during WWII and the time from the establishment of the Italian Republic and the signing of the Lateran Treaty, but those are exceptions)
