I think it’s just poorly worded.
Colbert’s entire show is based on being a satirical parody of a conservative host, when it’s an open secret that he’s actually quite liberal.

When George W. Bush was President, Colbert was the featured comedian at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and was rather mean-spirited in his jokes about Bush—he is definitely not a conservative. Maybe some liberals find him funny.
