Apparently, General Prudencio Mendoza was the General who horse was shot out from under him. It was General Mendoza who Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio gave his horse. Additionally, Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio gave covering fire so that General Mendoza could escape.

Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio was admired by the troops that he served with.

There is a website that has the movie For Greater Glory for only $7.39.

To make the story cohesive, there are characters that are combined so that the story flows.

It was actually General Prudencio Mendoza that Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio asked to allow him to join the Cristiada.

In the movie, General Enrique Gorostieta (played by Andy Garcia) is the one who allows Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio to join the Cristiada. And I believe the movie has Father Vega as the one who Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio gave his horse to...

But the movie tries to be as historically correct as possible. Sometimes Hollywood takes some liberties to allow the film to flow.

Finally, the priest who Peter O'Toole played, is Saint Father Christopher Magallanes.

And the actor who played in Bella, Eduardo Verástegui, plays Blessed Anacleto Gonzales Flores.

Blessed Anacleto Gonzales Flores was beatified at the same time as Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio by Pope Benedict XVI.

There is one source that states that besides skinning the bottom of the feet of Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio, they forced him to walk on salt to make it as painful as possible.

Blessed José Sánchez del Río is a wmderful saint, and his portrayal in "For Greater Glory" was very moving. How much I learned from that movie!

That makes the subsequent career of Marcial Maciel all the more disturbing. The stink of sociopathic corruption concealed by the cloak of holiness.
