Illinois Bishop Upholds Priest’s Decision to Deny Communion to Pro-Abort Sen. Dick Durbin

SPRINGFIELD, IL, April 3, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois, known for his outspoken defense of the right to life and the natural family, has signaled his support for denying Communion to Catholic politicians who publicly endorse activities gravely contrary to the moral law.

The bishop wrote recently to a pro-life activist to affirm that he is upholding a diocesan priest’s decision to deny Communion to U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL, who has a 100% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood.

Paprocki’s e-mail was reported Thursday by Catholic commentator Matt Abbott.

“Senator Durbin was informed several years ago by his pastor at Blessed Sacrament Parish here in Springfield that he was not permitted to receive Holy Communion per canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law,” Paprocki wrote. “My predecessor upheld that decision and it remains in effect. It is my understanding that the senator is complying with that decision here in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.”

Finally, a crack in that wall, let’s hope this emboldens others.

Is this just that Priest or is Durbin blocked, period Catholic wide?

Durbin is just another reason why the state of Illinois seemingly is in economic and moral decline.

Here’s another example of the disregard for the value of life in the land of Lincoln. This legislation could be a precursor for euthanasia.”Earlier this afternoon, the Illinois Senate voted 34-18 with one voting present to pass SB 3076, a bill to amend the Illinois Department of Public Health Powers and Duties Law of the Civil Administrative Code to make the “Physician Orders For Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST)” form the advance directive to be honored in health care facilities. Six state senators did not cast a vote at all.” Source Illinois Family Institute

Durbin probably hasn’t been to Church in decades.

About time. When the Catholic Church stands up to its leftists, people will take notice.

Most politicians don’t live in their “home towns” or even “home states”. They have offices there but I’m sure Durbin gets his religious PR from Catholic Churches elsewhere. And I doubt any priest in the DC area would ever stand up to the politicians.

Obama hasn’t been to church since he got elected. And I don’t think Bill Clinton has been to church since the senate didn’t impeach him. With the exception of a few funerals so he could get on TV. I wonder if his five pound Bible is in his house trailer library in Little Rock.

Obama has been to church, although infrequently, since elected and Michelle and the girls have gone with him. Mostly they go to the Episcopal church that is close by the WH, but they have also gone to an historically black church. Wonder what they will do for Easter?

Excellent.

It should be noted that Bishop Paprocki has no authority NOT to “uphold” the priest’s decision.

Every bishop who attempts to pressure his priests to give Communion to pro-aborts is abusing his office and committing a mortal sin.

This is not a punishment, or a “penalty.”

That is, the priest is simply obeying the moral law and canon law. It is not a matter of the priest’s “jurisdiction,” because the priest is not imposing a punishment on Durbin.

Durbin is bound not to receive Communion ANYWHERE. If any priest, anywhere, gives Durbin Communion, both that priest and Durbin commit a mortal sin.

If Durbin receives Communion in the Archdiocese of Washington, where Cardinal Wuerl suspends priests who obey the Church’s law, then any priest who gives Durbin Communion commits a mortal sin, as well as the Cardinal, and Durbin himself.

Wuerl has lied that he cannot deny Communion to pro-abortion politicians in his Archdiocese because the decision is up to their bishops “back home.” Everything Wuerl has said on the topic of Canon 915 has been a lie—even “and” and “the.”

Catholics are obliged to attend Mass every Sunday.

Pro-abortion Catholics like Durbin use Mass attendance, and the reception of Communion, as a political weapon. The vast majority of bishops and priests allow them to do so.

They defend their mortally sinful actions by whining that if they denied pro-aborts Communion, it would be “using Communion as a weapon”—a perfect inversion of the truth.

Now what will be interesting is if somebody in the media asks Donna Wuerl about whether he will uphold Bishop Paprocki's determination.

Wuerl, at least, used to hold the position that he will not, on his own, enforce Canon 915 on Congresscritters, as, in his opinion, canonically "transients" when in DC and that they remain "residents" of their home districts. That has long been his stand in regards to Pelosi, Biden, et al, being refused Holy Communion. When the Ordinary of Kansas City, Archbishop Naumann, forbade Kathleen Sebelius from approaching Holy Communion, Wuerl's spokesperson, Susan Gibbs, stated that Wuerl would respect that decision.

So I wonder if Wuerl will instruct the pastor of St Joseph's Parish, Capitol Hill (the geographic parish where Durbin lives in DC) to comply with Bishop Paprocki's decision.

How does Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden taking Communion at the Vatican, fit into that description?
