I’ve been thinking the same. Great minds...
Thank God for grace to refute such wresting of Scripture. (2Pt. 3:16)
And maybe you have seen this new grievous thread: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/3132801/posts
Actually, I happened to know that priest and he was not a “notorious womanizer”. The press was looking for anything to get at O’Connor (because of his opposition to abortion and gays) and they found enough to use with the monsignor. He was a good looking, charming man, but he knew the limits and he was also extremely orthodox. I think he was more careless than anything else, because he didn’t believe that people would interpret his perfectly open behavior as anything other than innocent. More fool he - I know another priest to whom the same thing happened. In his case, after he had been removed and nearly destroyed by the bishop, it turned out that the woman who had accused him of sexual impropriety had claimed this of virtually every man she had ever met, practically down to the bagger at the grocery store.
I think O’Connor’s heart was broken by the terrible Covenant House affair. I still remember when he called Fr. Bruce Ritter in and asked him about it and then came out and proclaimed that Ritter had said he was innocent and that a priest would never lie. The next day the tapes came out, and of course, Bruce Ritter then said, ooops, sorry, I did lie.
To Cdl O’Connor, being a priest was enormously important and he really did have a hard time believing that a priest would lie. I’m sure he called in all the gay priests, asked them, they said no, and he just accepted it.
He may not have been a good manager - he left a lot of churches open that Dolan is now closing, but that’s because O’Connor felt that bringing the sacraments and the Church to the people was important, even if it wasn’t financially sound. And he was the one who got the schools initiative rolling.
And he opposed the City of NY and made them back down, and I haven’t seen anybody with his guts since then.
Would I have said what Cardinal Dolan said? No. I probably would have said, “Hey, I wish Mike well as an athlete and as a human being. I believe that part of what he does off the field is sinful, but I don’t hate him for that, we’re all sinners in one way or another, I just hope and pray he turns from it. But, David, Mike Sam is coming out to thunderous applause from the sports media, the news media in general and what passes for the cool crowd in modern society. And the media and modern society being what they are, he had no good reason to expect anything else. Courageous? Really?”
Given the opportunity, would I have urged the cardinal to reply like that? Sure. And believe me, there are prelates out there who need my advice on this sort of thing more desperately than Cardinal Dolan. (Looking right at you, Cardinal Mahony.) Discussing them in the language that Ann and others do, on the other hand, is not of interest to me. Not just because I’m a noob, but because I wouldn’t even talk about them like that if I were remaining Protestant. If I really had the urge to, I’d drop out of RCIA and put my application in at The Tract Publisher Whose Works Shall Not Be Posted On FR, which happens to be here in the Inland Empire, and try to get paid for it.
>> Bravo to sodomy. Bravo to one man jamming...
So being “gay” isn’t about tap dancing in the rain?
Not unlike the display of dismembered fetuses, I think it also makes sense to describe the behavior the states are forcing the citizens to service, sanction, and support.
I’m Baptist, and I miss Benedict XVI!
What FR needs is an alert mechanism so that every time a specific poster has something of import to say, I could immediately drop what I am doing to read it.
Try to stay humble, but you are at the top of my list now. You should be writing for “First Things”.
St. Michael the Archangel is the Original “Braveheart”...
Love the picture. Thanks for posting it!
Have a blessed Easter Vigil. You’ll be in my prayers.
“...they should be somewhat alarming....”
Only to those who NEED to be alarmed... :^)
I kinda think of this way - it’s good to have him on my side...
Great pic! It just became my desktop background. Thanks!!!
Also: Please tell MR. Don-o that “Manger Dawg Hale” says “Woof!” He’ll know.
Thank you for your list of examples of appropriate use of “colorful language” in the very word of God. Miss Barnhardt remains within those guidelines in her piece.
Also, as you pointed out, Saint Paul teaching us that “homosexuals will not inherit the Kingdom of God” certainly illustrates how one must point out others’ sin and that is not being judgmental when done in love and without worldly vengeance. In fact there is an Old Testament passage that says that if we fail to point out our brothers’ sin, we stand condemned. Two of the seven “Spiritual Works of Mercy” found in the Catechism are very related here: to “instruct the ignorant” and to “admonish the sinner”. (To do so, then, is not being judgmental!)
“So the mechanics of getting out from under the render to Caesar requirement is rather difficult.”
No, not at all - “... Render to God what is God’s.” If tax-paid government funding is used to promote immorality (as the citizen discerns), then ...

The posted article concerns the disreputable Cardinal Archbishop of New York, yet your several comments are off-topic; paying/not paying taxes. Taxes may be thought of as debt imposed by society or the state, and for the imposition there should be a corresponding benefit. If the benefit is weighted toward a self-serving political elite, then there is a problem.
Perhaps you're unaware of former Senator, former Governor, campaign bundler for Obama, Jon Corzine, who stole billions of client funds and is walking around a free man. Doesn't that bother you?
Daffy, see my FR mail.
To all:
I want to express my sincere apologies for making offtopic comments; I will not make any more such posts in this thread.
