Pray for our American Heroes and Nation
3/12/14 | Hiskid

TOPICS: Prayer
KEYWORDS: military; pray; prayer
Father, Most Wonderful God, with the Psalmist we declare: “Who can put into words and tell the mighty deeds of the Lord? Or who can show forth all the praise [that is due Him]?” Help us to praise and glorify You. In our inability to praise You adequately, we simply ask You to see the praise for You in our hearts.

We pray today for the men and women of our military. We acknowledge that each one is a gift from You. As such, we want protection, success and Your favor for them and their families. Our prayer is, “May grace (God’s favor) and peace (which is perfect well-being, all necessary good, all spiritual prosperity, and freedom from fears and agitating passions and moral conflicts) be multiplied to them in [the full, personal, precise, and correct] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. For His divine power has bestowed upon them all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [full, personal] knowledge of You Who calls them by and to Your own glory and excellence (virtue)”.2 Peter 1:1-3

We pray for our Nation, as well, Sir. Today I commit to totally trusting You and ask You to put a watch on my mouth to speak only words of faith over our Government. We have asked You, the Faithful One, for help. I choose to believe to receive. Thank You, Sir, for bringing godly sorrow to our citizenry and our political leaders. “Pain handled in God’s way produces a turning from sin to God which leads to salvation, and there is nothing to regret in that! But pain handled in the world’s way produces only death.” May this godly sorrow…”produce earnest diligence, eagerness to clear ourselves, indignation, fear, longing, zeal, and readiness to put things right!”.2 Cor. 7:9-11

We pray today in the name of Jesus, our Christ. Amen.

The Golden Rule

March 12, 2014

Read: Matthew 7:7-12

Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them. —Matthew 7:12
Bible in a Year:
Deuteronomy 17-19; Mark 13:1-20

The concept of The Golden Rule—treat others as you would like to be treated—appears in many religions. So what makes Jesus’ version of the saying so exceptional?

Its uniqueness lies in a single word, “therefore,” that signals the generosity of our heavenly Father. Here is what Jesus said: “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them” (Matt. 7:11-12 italics added).

All of us fall short of what we know to be true: We do not love others the way God loves us. Jesus lived out that admirable ethic with perfect love by living and dying for all our sins.

We have a loving, giving Father who set aside His own self-interest to reveal the full measure of His love through His Son Jesus. God’s generosity is the dynamic by which we treat others as we would like to be treated. We love and give to others because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).

Our heavenly Father asks us to live up to His commands, but He also gives us His power and love to carry it out. We need only to ask Him for it.

Heavenly Father, I know that I lack Your
patience and mercy and love. Please show
Your perfect love through me in some small
way today. In Your Son Jesus’ name I pray.
We have committed The Golden Rule to memory; now let us commit it to life. —E. Markham

Thank you, dear ones, for praying. I do not "cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light."

Prone To Wander

March 14, 2014

Read: Psalm 119:9-16

With my whole heart I have sought You; oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! —Psalm 119:10
Bible in a Year:
Deuteronomy 23-25; Mark 14:1-26

One of my favorite classic hymns is “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” which was written in 1757 by 22-year-old Robert Robinson. In the hymn’s lyrics is a line that always captures my attention and forces me to do some self-evaluation. The line says, “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.” I feel that way sometimes. Too often I find myself distracted and drifting, instead of having my heart and mind focused on the Savior who loves me and gave Himself for me. Robert Robinson and I are not alone in this.

In those seasons of wandering, our heart of hearts doesn’t want to drift from God—but, like Paul, we often do what we don’t want to do (Rom. 7:19), and we desperately need to turn back to the Shepherd of our heart who can draw us to Himself. David wrote of this struggle in His great anthem to the Scriptures, Psalm 119, saying, “With my whole heart I have sought You; oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!” (v.10).

Sometimes, even when our hearts long to seek God, the distractions of life can draw us away from Him and His Word. How grateful we can be for a patient, compassionate heavenly Father whose grace is always sufficient—even when we are prone to wander!

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above. —Robinson
Our tendency to wander is matched by God’s willingness to pursue.

Amen to your prayer! When we evil being pushed so hard, quickly and fervently on a nation, it’s discouraging. Thanks for reminding us that we must trust God.

Today I commit to totally trusting You and ask You to put a watch on my mouth to speak only words of faith over our Government.
