A single Mass offered for oneself during life may be worth more than a thousand celebrated for the same intention after death. (St. Gregory the Great, similar by Benedict XVI)
Not because the eternal sacrifice of Christ is different in either Mass, but because the soul while in the living body will prevent future sins.
