Catholic Caucus: Father Gary needs your help...
Facebook - Opus Bono Page ^ | September 10, 2013

Father Gary still needs your help. His car has broken down and it will cost him over $1000 to fix it. His Social Security check and small retirement pension only cover his basic living expenses. His health no longer permits him to work as a supply priest at the local parish, so he has no other income. A kindly neighbor must use his vehicle to drive him to the doctors and for his necessities. He has no other form of transportation to assist him. His diocese cannot afford to give him the funds he needs for his car repairs, so Father Gary has asked Opus Bono to ask our Facebook Friends if someone would be willing to help him.

"I've been a good priest all my forty years of ministry and I've cared for a lot of people." Father said when he called us today. "I"m so embarrassed to have to ask for your help. The diocese suggested I contact you."

Will you please consider helping Father Gary in honor of all the priests in your life that have done so much for you? His need is desperately urgent at this time!

I hate to say this, but are you sure this is legit? Ever since I first heard of Lenny Bruce scamming the faithful presenting he was a needy priest (this was in the 60’s!) I have been wary. Plus I thought that dioceses and religious orders paid out, if not princely, at least adequate pensions?

If you doubt this organization, contact:

Father Michael Orsi

He is at Ave Maria in Naples, Florida.

Ave Maria is considered one of the best Catholic Colleges in the country.

Father Michael Orsi is an adviser to Opus Bono Sacerdotii

Cardinal Dulles, SJ (now deceased) is a former adviser to this organization.

It is an organization to help needy priests and religious...

Your point about concern was a good one. So I did some research about them...

Their website is:

OpusBono.org

Their name is:

Opus Bono Sacerdotii

This translates to:

"Work for the Good of the Priesthood."

I guess they use their FACEBOOK page for special cases like Father Gary.

I guess my only concern about this is that Father Gary might have been a liberal, bad priest, but even so, all priests deserve our support.

And since they help all priests, it could any priest in any diocese, not necessarily Michigan.

Maybe this organization needs more publicity so that they can carry on their work.

I went one step further and posed the question (via email) to one of the Vicar General's of my diocese. His response was:

"I would not claim to be well informed about Opus Bono Sacerdoti but everything I have heard to date has been positive."

When I sent a donation for Father Gary, I wrote that they should try to get on EWTN to get more visibility. Maybe Father Orsi could help me arrange that.
