The first day of the first month is the new year for reckoning the seasons, the festal calendar, and the reigns of Jewish kings. The first day of the seventh month is the "new year for years," ie, the reckoning of history and chronology.
The Sabbatical and Jubilee years, which are to be observed every seven years (in the case of the former) and fifty years (in the case of the latter) begin and end in the seventh month, not the first month, because that is when the "calendar year" begins.
The first day of the seventh month (Ro'sh HaShanah) is the anniversary of the Sixth Day of Creation, when Adam was created. The anniversary of the First Day of Creation is the 25th day of the sixth month, which is this coming Shabbat.
