‘Gaying the pray away,’ via the Washington Post

The best journalists strive to present facts without bias or editorial comment.

Then there’s the Washington Post Twitter page.

In reporting on Exodus International’s decision to shut down, whoever tweets for the Post chose op-ed cutesy over straight-news accuracy.

The Post’s tweet, sent to 1.7 million of the newspaper’s followers:

Gaying the pray away

Huh?

What does that even mean?

Did the Post’s social-media gurus fear that a less-biased tweet wouldn’t draw as many clicks? This was the headline on the actual story to which the tweet linked:

Exodus International, criticized for ‘reparative therapies’ for gay Christians, to shut down

Now, that headline’s not perfect. I’d prefer one without scare quotes that describes what Exodus did in a less tilted manner. But it’s better than the tweet.

As we discussed in our previous post on Exodus last week, the media’s frequently referenced “pray the gay away” quote lacks a named source.

As our esteemed head GetReligionista — tmatt — has noted, “In all of my years covering ex-gays, I’ve never met anyone who actually claimed they could pray the gay away.”

Like the Associated Press and Religion News Service stories covered in the previous post, the Post article notes Exodus head Alan Chamber’s comments on theology and changing position on how to relate to the gay community:

In an apology to the gay community, Chambers noted that he “cannot apologize for my deeply held biblical beliefs about the boundaries I see in scripture surrounding sex” and marriage but added that he will no longer “fight you on your beliefs or the rights that you seek.”

Chambers, who says he and his wife Leslie “are more in love than we’ve ever have been” but admits to still being attracted to men, said in a nearly hour-long talk Wednesday at the organization’s 38th annual conference that he and Exodus leaders came to the conclusion that God was calling them to shut down the ministry.

The New York Times, too, notes that Chambers still believes that Scripture does not condone homosexuality.

Has anybody seen any coverage where Chambers — or any other advocates of the ex-gay movement — actually said that they can “pray the gay away?”

[[Actually, “Pray the Gay Away” was not the Exodus slogan]]

you are correct- the ‘pray the gay away’ was a mocking term coined by homosexuals who were furious that God’s peopel would dare brign up the fact tht homosecuality is a sin and not a condition- God overcoems sin- but the gay groups want us to beleive homosexcuality is a condition that can’t be ‘prayed away’- so they coined the mokcing term to deride Christrians

[[Well, you need to read some books! :)]]

Why woudl that be? Scientific evidence supports the need fro an itnelligent design, and for special creation- Again ill ask, is methula’s stance that evolution happened/

I seem to be speaking a foreign language today.

"Gay the pray away" was the nonsense that was tweeted, right? Clearly, it was a boast of gay victory over its enemies. "Gaying" is a verb to them. You "gay" something.

My response was -- for those in Rio Linda -- no, "pray the gay away" is what is correct. Like everyone else with a voice in the media today, the little girl's message is the dead reverse of what is true.

I don't know what Exodus' slogan is, or was, or will be.

Malthus.

Read him. Look him up if you want to get an idea as to what he’s about.

all i get is that he felt we woudl be overpopulated- don’tr have tiem to look into somehtign with out reason- as I said- I’m mroe than confortable knowign that swcience supports the need for an ID and for special creation- the hypothesis of macroevolutio nis imposibble on many levels- so impossible, there’s no way it coudl have hsappened- IF malthus beleives in evoltuion, I don’t really care to look him up - I simpyl asked fro a bsic rundown of what he beleives- as all i can find is in regards to him believing soemthign that wasn’t treu regardign poulation- I’m more interested in sceince which has evidence to support it than I am in hypothesis’ that defy natural law-

Much of what you see motivating your opposition in the world today, be it Marx or Darwin is motivated by Malthus and his assumptions.

In order to understand them you have to understand Malthus, even if they themselves do not understand Malthus. The reason why Darwin postulated that competition for scarce resources would drive evolution is because Malthus asserted that such a thing was actually possible for population to outstrip resources.

Exodus has had many serious theological problems over the last few years, and Exodus completely split from Evangelicals and traditional Christians at least three years ago. The founder of Exodus, Alan Chambers, began preaching antinomianism. Which is a type of preaching that says that as long as you love Jesus, you do not have to pay any attention to all those other things taught in the Bible, such as the law. The part that goes, “If you love me, keep my commandments” is reinterpreted, “If you love me, break my commandments.”

So? I'm married for 30 years, and I'm still attracted to cute young women. I just don't ACT UPON my temptations. Is it so hard to understand?

And a good looking young guy turns my head. And any other normal female as well regardless of age.

But temptation is not sin.

Entertaining it. Engaging it. Acting on it. That's sin.

Nobody can help the thoughts that pop into their heads when they're not expecting it, but they don't have to keep them there.

Correct. And you're right, it's very confusing. First the LGBQ's make up a mocking slogan, and then they make up a 2nd mocking slogan to mock the first one. Neither of which is God's honest truth.

Twisted, for sure.

“Pray the gay away” is something liberals made up to ridicule their opposition, just like the “Flying Spaghetti Monster”
