Boston LDS temple tumult called beneficial to church

KILLINGTON, Vt. — An insider who helped broker the challenges that arose over construction of the Boston LDS Temple in the mid-1990s told a group of history buffs Friday that the project's highly educated opponents let ignorance about the LDS Church rule over reason.

But Grant Bennett believes that ultimately, the high-profile controversy has served the church well, simply because it forced LDS officials in both Massachusetts and Salt Lake City to explain the specifics of their faith in what ultimately became a widespread public education campaign.

He detailed those efforts for a standing-room-only crowd during the opening day of the 40th annual meeting of the Mormon History Association.

Bennett, who was serving as a bishop for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Belmont, Mass., in 1995 when President Gordon B. Hinckley announced a temple would be built there, said he believes there have been long-term benefits to the church.

A decade after the controversy began, the state has an LDS governor in Mitt Romney; two top administrators at Harvard are LDS; and former Brigham Young University basketball star Danny Ainge is leading the Boston Celtics.

"We take government, education and sports very seriously," he said, winking at the implication that his fellow residents are now more conversant about and comfortable with the LDS Church and its members.

Watching FOX News this morning, a guest said that public funds were used to construct the Mosque where the Boston marathon bombers attended and where they were allegedly radicalized. They used the lie that this Mosque was to be a "community center" thus eligible to receive public funds. Sound familiar? Muslims think we Americans are such idiots!

I am outraged!! The LDS Church wanted to build a Temple in Boston (announced 9/30/95) and OH NO the people of Boston would have none of it! Nonetheless, the Boston LDS Temple was ultimately dedicated on October 1, 2000, but not until there were years of protests by the people of Boston and Boston government officials. No public funds involved!!

Political correctness has gone berserk and has caused our beloved country to slip into the abyss of hell - unless good people wake up!

The lie that these Mosques qualify for public funds because they are to be utilized as a “community center” is just a way to make fools out of the American people. This same lie was used to get permission to build the Mosque at Ground Zero. Remember?

It seems as if Boston has become a nest of jihadis similar to the way London has over on the other side of the pond.

A whole story could be written about how Massachusetts, the most collectivist State in the nation, has become a real utopia of blessing to the rest of the nation.

Might as well call it the New UK!

Yet the Bostonians were all for the Mosque. Go figure!
