I'm not arguing -- I just wanted to get the definitions for my own reference.
In general, a member of a religious institute of women, living in a community under the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. More accurately, nuns are religious women under solemn vows living a cloistered, contemplative life in a monastery.
A popular term for religious women, whether cloistered nuns or members of congregations under simple vows. The title corresponds to brothers in mens' religious institutes and signifies that they are are all members of the same spiritual family, share possessions in common, and live together in Christlike charity.
Every vow, whether private or public, that is not expressly acknowledged by the Church as solemn. The term came into use with the Church's recognition that religious congregations are authentic institutes of Christian perfection, as distinct from religious orders. Simple vows render actions committed against the vows illicit, unlike solemn vows that make such actions invalid.
In watching the reruns of Mother Angelica Live, this week, I was surprised to learn that she rarely went to church as a child. She did not like the nuns at school and swore she would never become one. Her parents divorced when she was 6; at school, the other children kept their distance. She was a loner ... bitter and angry. When one of her teachers suggested that she could do well if she applied herself, she said she did not care. Later in life, she realized that God had used all of this to help her become who she is today. She suffered a massive stroke 12 years ago and the doctors did not give her long to live. One of the sisters recalled that Mother Angelica asked our Lord to let her live a long life so she could continue to use her time on earth to pray for souls and the network.
Amen! God Bless her.
She is a miracle-working saint among us.
God bless you and Happy Birthday Mother Angelica. A true disciple of the Lord.
She has also been the recipient of two miracles - the cure of her stomach ailment and the restoration of her crippled leg. The before and after x-rays cannot be explained by medical professionals.
I truly believe that, like JPII, when Mother dies, there will be a huge, worldwide shout of Santo Subito.
I cannot begin to list all of the good things Mother Angelica has done for me. As a convert, I have learned so much from all of the shows on the EWTN network Mother founded, and have had so many questions answered.
In her own shows, Mother demonstrated such wisdom and common sense and spiritual insight, and had a great sense of humor to go with that, and was always cracking up her live audience!
There were so many great shows she gave to us, including Father Corapi's long and detailed Catechism teaching series (when he was still there, before his sad departure), and the old "Life on the Rock" with Jeff Cavins, and the various Bible courses and apologetics shows, and music shows, and the many wonderful newer shows, and on and on and on...
Blessed Mother Mary, please pray with and for Mother Angelica, as we all thank God for Mother Angelica, and we ask God to please keep Mother Angelica in His loving care.
I stumbled across one of her books (about the tough answers to tough questions in life) in a thrift store and brought it home to read. I was inspired by her practical, outspoken faith. She made me wish I had cable!
Mother suffered a massive stroke, 12 years ago. Due to the popularity of her programs, EWTN now has man of them them posted on YouTube. A quick note about the habit. In the earlier shows, she is wearing the contemporized habit adopted by the order. I'm not sure at what point but she decided that her community would adopt the original Carmelite habit. Hence, when you view the videos, you will notice Mother Angelica, sometimes in the contemporary habit, after which she appears only in the traditional habit.
I didn’t know that! Thanks so much!
