Really extraordinarily interesting. I read it quick, once, and will read it again, taking longer and mousing around in some of the footnores. Thank you, Brian!
When I first read about Pope Francis’ supposed lack of support for the TLM I contacted several friends here in the USA who had worked with the TFP in South America. I suspected that the Cardinal’s opposition wasn’t so much to the TLM itself but to the groups of people requesting it and their political affiliations. But I didn’t have enough knowledge of the history or politics of Argentina to figure out which groups there were attached to and requesting the TLM, and my contacts were primarily originally from Brazil and they were not well versed in the Argentine Church and its politics.
But my suspicion all along has been that there were political undertones to Cardinal Bergoglio’s actions in regard to liturgy there. This article does a good job of bringing that into focus.
