But was Pope Benedict XVI when he was just Cardinal Joseph Razinger was he also Blessed Pope John II’s right-hand man in the Vatican before he became Pope?

I am keeping you busy with a lot questions. :)

I’d say witnessing for Jesus with his blood is going to be the defining issue for the next pope. And he knows something about that.

He was well known to some cardinals long before he JPI conclave. He had participated in Vatican II and not as a wallflower and his book on sexuality was well known and respected. His philosophical writings and his work implementing the council in Poland were also known.

He was unknown to the media and to world-illiterate Catholics in the US and Western Europe. But that’s always a good sign, when the low-information Catholics don’t know about someone. Beware the candidate that the LICs know well.

You got it, as we see more and more Christians witness for the Lord with their very blood and lives.

brings churchgoers to laughter and tears with his homilies

Sends me running in the opposite direction, like to Sri Lanka.

He sings on stage, preaches on TV, brings churchgoers to laughter and tears with his homilies. And he's on Facebook.

*************************

He should get a TV show.

No, thank you.

If the LIC’s are even bothering to pay attention at all, period.

At least he gets the churchgoers to think and reflect, putting into action in their lives the message of the homily from the day’s mass. Plus his humility I admire.

The ones I really get concern are the “curia insiders”.

I was concerned that his homilies were all variations of “love your neighbor” or similar non-controversial subject matter, but upon reading his wiki that appears not to be the case. Turns out he is anything but reticent on morality, and is very outspoken on prolife issues and was not afraid to speak out loudly against the Obama-like Phillipine Reproductive Health bill. I still am not accustomed to parishioners emoting during Mass, and couldn’t accept that, but the problem seems to be theirs, not his.
