Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly, who is writing an upcoming book titled “Killing Jesus,” proclaimed on his program Wednesday night that “a lot of the Bible is allegorical,” and the New Testament Gospels contradict themselves.

O’Reilly made the remarks during an interview with “Touched by an Angel” star Roma Downey and her husband Mark Burnett, executive producers of “The Bible” TV miniseries which begins this Sunday night on the History Channel.

The New Testament was originally written in Greek.

Bill should focus on subjects that he knows about.

If he did, the list would be pretty short.

Pompous idiot.

Even as recently as Queen Victoria, didn’t she use the royal “we”.

I am also interested to know what denomination you belong to that says it's OK to have contradictions.

Contradictions are not OK. That would mean the Word of God is not God's word...but man...and thus falilble. And if you can "foul" the Word...then you can pick and choose your doctrines because it would be simple to say "this is man's writing...God never said that."

This is a slippery slope that has led many to hell.

Here we see Man created and then all the animals, specifically and given by name including cattle and birds, both of which were specifically named in Genesis 1 as having been created before man. The same is true of plants and many other things as well, but this was the best example I think. It would be very hard to see this as anything other than a contradiction, unless one resorts to wildly strange ways of reading the text.

I'm not sure which version you're quoting from, but in the Douay-Rheims, Genesis 2.19 is translated as "And the Lord God having formed out of the ground all the beasts of the earth, and all the fowls of the air, brought them to Adam to see what he would call them: for whatsoever Adam called any living creature the same is its name." The NIV is similar.

The explanation as I understand it is that in ancient Hebrew, the tense of a verb is determined by its context. Since the context from Chapter 1 is that the animals were created before humans, "having formed" would be the correct translation.

If everyone in the Bible agreed on things, critics would say there was collusion. If there were contradictions the critics would say “See, they can’t agree” - Ten eye witnesses to an event will give ten different views on it. There’s a great book out titled “Alleged Discrepancies In The Bible”.

I watched one O’Reilly episode a year or so back with him ‘defending the bible’ against some atheist on his show, it was some anti-Christ arrogant b. erlhman type,

Anyway, it was the most limp-wrist-ed uninspired attempt anyone could have put on if they really meant to defend the word, and if only in an impartial MSM professional journalist manner.

He should just stay with pretending to be a conservative on political issues,

Those like Bill need to figure out what Jesus meant by this, the hour is getting too late to still be wondering,

“But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah:” Matthew 12:39

I must admit, while the KJV is harder to understand, I feel as if I get more out of reading it. All other translations seem "to me" to be dull and lifeless...

There is a beauty, a majesty and a mastery of the English language in the King James that is very compelling, it brings many passages to life. It's occasionally challenging to people who were not steeped in it from childhood because it is more ornate than modern speech and written communication.

But, make no mistake, the English language as we understand it today was in fact in large part formalized by translation of the Bible into English. For that we owe a debt of gratitude to Tyndale, who gave his life to bring it to us. Something on the order of 80% of the King James can be attributed to Tyndale's earlier efforts.

And, as I mentioned, it was a very influential work, despite now being a rarity, the Tyndale Bible. The Book of I Corinthians alone contains so many popular catchphrases and figures of speech in use down to this very day, and the entire KJV does as well. For the unlearned, it's often mistaken for Shakespeare.

That is the level of regard in which your favored translation has been held and continues to be held. It's good to seek out assistance when challenged via other attempts at faithful translation into a more modern vernacular. It's also good to turn to the original language(s), via a Concordance if your abilities do not include understanding the Aramaic, Hebrew or Greek languages. Most cannot.

But, to wrap it up, I agree wholeheartedly. The King James just sings, it's *the* Bible in English for me, I'll always return to it because it is a masterpiece of English literature in it's own right, and that adds so much to the experience of reading the Bible.

It’s loudmouth and world’s foremost theoligian Bill O’Reilly job to sort out the crucifixion of Jesus as there are conflicting stories in the Bible. After 2,000 years only the all-knowing O’Reilly knows the truth and of course he’s “always looking out for you”. What a creepy blowhard.

Maybe “catholic” Bill will show us in the Bible where it’s OK to murder an unborn if the mother’s health in danger, or where in the Bible does it say it’s fine for two sodomites to adopt a child and raise it they are husband and wife. Liberal Bill has alot of splainin’ to do when he meets St. Peter.

Brother TBD,

It seems you have taken quite a beating on this thread. May I suggest you reevaluate the material you used for your Bible course. I pray for you and for the brothers that attended your course. Please see the error of your ways. May this speak to your heart.

"Bill O'Reilly just thinks he's God".

Obama thinks he's the Messiah.

Now I see how so many false religions formed over the centuries as the folks followed so many fake gods, messiahs and prophets.
