Card. George on HHS Mandate: "Institutions for Which We're Responsible Will Simply Not Cooperate"
Catholic World Report ^ | 2/8/13 | Catherine Harmon

"It will be up to the government to decide what it wants to do."

CNS has a video of a brief interview with Cardinal Francis George, in which he discusses the Obama administration's new HHS mandate regulations:

"I understand the new regulations expand not the definition [of religious institutions] but they expand the number of institutions that might be accommodated by it. But the issue of government taking upon itself...to decide what is religious and what is not is truly a constitutional issue and that must go forward.

"The bishops have made it very clear that the institutions for which we're responsible will simply not cooperate, and then it will be up to the government to decide what it wants to do. I think that's where we are, and that's where we stay."

Should the cardinals pull this off, it’ll be proof (to me, at least) that the church has begun the recovery from its gay priest episodes...and I’ll look to rejoin.

Rebelling against the Obamadork is good.

Lets see how well the left tolerates civil disobedience.

It wasn't too long ago they using the Constitution to validate their own. Back when they pretended to take it seriously.

Thanks for that. A while ago I was unable to convince a few here that “civil disobedience” didn’t mean pacifism or well-behaved disobedience but disobedience by citizens to onerous laws or policies. “Civil” in this sense means citizen as in “civil rights”.

Perhaps the good Cardinal will be penning his version of “Letters From The Birmingham Jail” in the future.

The Obama Admin won’t be so stupid as to send clergy to jail over this.

The response will be financial in nature, like what they’re trying to do with Hobby Lobby.
