A CATHOLIC adoption agency has been warned it will lose its charitable status unless it changes its policy towards gay couples.
The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (Oscr) investigated the practices of St Margarets Children and Family Care Society in Glasgow, after a complaint from the National Secular Society, and found the charity was operating in breach of the Equality Act 2010.
The society gives priority to prospective adoptive parents who have been married for at least two years and wish to adopt within the framework of the Catholic faith. The Oscr report stated that: [Because] marriage is not available to same-sex couples this constitutes direct discrimination.
The report continued that the organisations criteria for those who wanted to adopt was unduly restricted and concluded the charity does not provide public benefit and it therefore fails the charity test.
St Margarets has until 22 April to comply with the Equality Act, Oscr said. However, education secretary Mike Russell criticised the regulators decision. He said: We do not believe that this outcome is in the best interests of the children St Margarets helps, who are in need of a safe and loving family home.
St Margarets should be able to continue its valuable work and are actively and urgently seeking a solution. I will personally meet with representatives of St Margarets next week to discuss the best way forward.
However Oscrs head of registration, Martin Tyson, said: We acknowledge the valuable service provided by this charity, but the fact is that all charities must comply with the law, including the Equality Act 2010. Where we find this is not the case, we have a duty to act.

The Tolerance Police strike again. Religious freedom and so-called gay rights cannot co-exist.
If they are true to their credo, one must assume they must shut the service down. Not sure that would stop the fagola from getting children, tho.
Ooops, sorry, typo. That should be fagolae.
Scotland used to be a religious country. I would hope that the Presbyterians would be as offended by this as the Catholics.
It seems to me that the Scots should work to reverse the Equality Act of 2010, which may have been passed without their realizing the full implications.
The judgment was based on the law, and evidently the days are past when anyone can argue that a law is oppressive, immoral, and anti-Christian.
I realize that Presbyterians in general have a long history of hating Catholics. But they really need to understand the urgency of all Christians getting together on points they can agree on, to oppose a tyrannical and immoral government.
Close the doors and schedule a press conference.
Catholic Charities has ceased providing adoption services in some states because they have remained faithful to their beliefs.
The homosexual crowd effectively put them out of the adoption business.
Many children are languishing in “The System” because of the selfishness of a tiny minority of the population.
I could not even adopt a DOG until they had checked out my home to make sure it was suitable, yet children are not given the same protection.
