What a profound statement for our time!
Since the late 1800's, under a banner of "liberalism," now called "progressivism," and advocating ideologies more akin to Marxism than to America's founding idea of Creator-endowed liberty, a powerful movement has washed over the political landscape in much the same destructive manner as Hurricane Sandy.
At its heart, the so-called "progressive" movement does, in fact, "usurp an authority that belongs properly to God."
That is why its advocates must work feverishly to remove all references to God, to the role of Divine Providence, and to Creator's law as the basis of human law from the nation's textbooks and public square places.
That is why they turn the attention of citizens to government bureaucracies as the source of help, for they know that by doing so, they also direct those citizens gratitude and allegiance to government, not God.
A wisdom book advises: "Be not deceived: God is not mocked. . . ."
For a season, American citizens have allowed "progressives" to censor their textbooks, to dominate their media, and to exercise their coercive power in places of government.
Perhaps, just perhaps, there is beginning to be a rediscovery of the ideas of liberty underlying America's Declaration of Independence--that "they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights": that "the laws of Nature and of Nature's God" and "Divine Providence" are active in the affairs of men, and that "the Supreme Judge of the world" rules.
Recognition of these enduring ideas was a cornerstone of American liberty, and, for generations they were taught to rising generations, directing the attention of citizens to the Source of their life, liberty and rights.
"Progressive" attempts to "usurp" the authority "that belongs properly to God" will not succeed in the long run. They never have! God's law is "like an anvil. It has worn out many hammers." (Anon.)
