The statement begins by reminding the laity that they are celebrating All Saints Day, then follows by invoking the memories of the holy people of the past to inspire a call for holiness.
Then the bishops throw down the gauntlet:
We, the bishops of Pennsylvania, see next Tuesday (November 6), Election Day, as a day of historical challenge for our time. We propose this statement now because the upcoming elections, at every level, offer a critical opportunity for Catholics i.e., all of us who are believers: clergy, religious, and lay alike to exercise our civic duty and fulfill our social responsibility in a way that becomes us as aspiring saints.
Because politics is the place where competing moral visions of a society meet and struggle, our democracy depends on people of conviction fighting for what they believe in the public square, yet doing so with an abiding respect for one another. That struggle includes and depends on all of us, precisely as Catholics. For if we believe that a particular issue is gravely evil or that it will result in serious damage to society, then we have a duty, both as Catholics and as Americans, to hold political candidates accountable.
The bishops then discuss American history with great clarity, noting:

Was this read in all pulpits during Mass this Sunday? Did the Bishops take a full page ad in the major newspapers? If not this is like the sound heard from that famous tree falling in an empty forest.
Yes sir, it was to be read all over PA, by every priest in every Mass.
Texas is said to be going blue by 2016. No such intentions for reading this type letter there that I have heard of.
We should be in fasting and prayer and lighting vigil candles though out Monday and again on Tuesday. Many shall be doing just that. no thanks to the interest or encouragement of most of our lackadaisical bishops and priests.
This quote says it all:
“...because the more the state provides, the more it inevitably controls...”
VOTE AGAINST OBAMA AND THE LIBERAL AGENDA!!!
Thanks for that info. Of course Catholics who don’t attend Mass may not know about it. Although one could argue that such folks are CINOs. The Huffington Post is raising a storm over this issue saying the Church is injecting itself into politics. Of course, Black Churches are exempt/sarc.
Exactly right you are on all counts. All of us must man up and inject our faith in this country, her institutions and where ever we damn please, until which time either the country is gone, or we Christians are. It is pasts time to take the gloves off with the now thriving domestic enemy of both the country and the Church.
Also, the east coast must be back online, because I am being shut out of FR again. What a dang grind. Give ‘em heck for me, as I am always among the first to get the blackout to FR. It is about the last straw.
See ya after the election.... when FR is up maybeby May! LOL!
