Bishop Cordileone Appointed Archbishop of San Francisco

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Salvatore Cordileone of Oakland as the new Archbishop of San Francisco, the Vatican announced today.

The 56 year-old San Diego-native replaces Archbishop George Niederauer, 76, who has led the archdiocese since 2006.

In an archdiocese renowned for its same-sex marriage battles, the appointment is particularly noteworthy: Bishop Cordileone is a forthright defender of traditional marriage, known for his strong pro-life record and theological orthodoxy.

A fluent Spanish speaker and canon lawyer, he was one of the creators of Proposition 8 - the state referendum banning same-sex marriage - arguing that “only one idea of marriage can stand" and that people have to stand up for that definition. "If that's going to be considered bigoted, we're going to see our rights being taken away - as is already happening," he said in 2009.

Since January 2011, Bishop Cordileone has served as chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for the Defense of Marriage, leading efforts to resist the legalization of same-sex marriage. He is also a member of the USCCB's Committee on Religious Liberty.

Before being appointed Bishop of Oakland by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009, Cordileone was auxiliary bishop in San Diego from 2002. Prior to that, he worked seven years in Rome as an assistant at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the highest judicial body in the Vatican, currently headed by Cardinal Raymond Burke.

Bishop Cordileone, a proponent of the extraordinary form, is also one of seventeen United States Bishops to sign the “Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience” - a manifesto issued in 2009 by Catholic, Orthodox and Evangelical Christian leaders to affirm support for "the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, and religious liberty".

He graduated from Crawford High School, then attended San Diego State for a year and transferred to University of San Diego, graduating in 1978, with a BA in philosophy (that’s what seminarians major in).

BTW... our family attended a Catholic Family Camp in the San Diego area this summer. I am so deeply proud of the lay people who built it and keep it running, debt-free I might add. And another wonderful spiritual development from San Diego is the Goretti Group. That is a movement of young San Diegans who are spreading a positive pro-purity message for young adults.

The Boy-Molestation Plague has STILL not been handled with all the attention and rigor it deserves. Perhaps this man, in the Homosexual Capital of the Universe, will have the guts to out and de-frock queer priests, and turn over molestation cases to the civil authorities immediately.

The clean-up must also extend to the gay-friendly religious orders operating in his archdiocese and be thorough enough to include the seminaries. This has gone far enough.

I think he is up to it.

Like I said above Pelosi isn’t happy about this — he’s her new bishop, and I bet he officially excommunicates her!

Please do not expect major changes, the man has to work with what is there. He will most likely make it safe for young, orthodox priests to work in SF. He will allow the TLM and will expand its use.

Not long ago they asked the sems at St Patrick's which rite they would like to be ordained under. The majority wanted to use the Latin Rite.

This will be a long, slow process. Please pray for +C, he will need all the help he can get, his new Chancery will not support him.

I agree. What must happen is what you suggest...young orthodox priests working in the diocese, forming the conscience of those in their care. The church moves slowly because God has great patience with His people. We must also have patience and pray, pray, pray.

+C is a good guy, this week he brought actual Carmelites from Lincoln NE into the diocese :). There are already Carmelites in SF, they came up from Mexico 100 years ago to escape the persecutions.

Please do not expect immediate major changes, but even this appointment represents a major, and very positive change. Archbishop Cordileone is a no nonsense, hard as nails orthodox priest. He is young and does not lack the vigor and stamina for the challenge as so many aging bishops do. He is a Canon lawyer and speaks softly, but deliberately. Like his name implies he will be an iron fist in a velvet glove.

My only disappointment is that, as a member of the Diocese of Oakland, we are losing him, but I am sure that Pope Benedict will give us someone equally qualified.

I love it. Those Carmelites from NE actually began in Las Vegas where I live. They left here a few years ago because they were given some land and their new building in NE.

The little church and building they had here was given to the Vietnamese Catholic community for their own church. It is called Our Lady of La Vang.

Yes, I too, am acquainted with my bishop.
