Obama: ’Not fair’ to deny contraception coverage at Catholic institutions

WASHINGTON, DC, July 10, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a short interview Monday with Karen Swensen of New Orleans’ CBS affiliate WWLTV, President Barack Obama reiterated his support for the HHS birth control mandate, this time adding it’s “not fair” that a woman working for a Catholic institution should “bear the burden and the cost” of paying for her own contraception.
Swensen posed a question from WWLTV viewer Michael Varino, “What can you say about a healthcare bill that’ll mandate insurance companies to provide birth control, sterilization, etc. to employees of Catholic universities, hospitals and churches since this goes against the Catholic religion?”
Swensen prefaced the question by stating that Varino “describes himself as a Catholic voter,” and followed it by adding, “We know there is compromising language in place. Some say it doesn’t go far enough and that the real, the much bigger issue is religious liberty, not contraception.”
Obama responded, “Yeah. Well it’s absolutely true that religious liberty is critical. I mean that’s what our country was founded on.
“That’s the reason why we exempted churches, we exempted religious institutions,” the president said.
“But we did say that big Catholic hospitals or universities who employ a lot of non-Catholics and who receive a lot of federal money, that for them to be in a position to say to a woman who works there you can’t get that from your insurance company even though the institution isn’t paying for it, that that crosses the line where that woman, she suddenly is gonna have to bear the burden and the cost of that. And that’s not fair,” Obama stated.

The birth control mandate, which would require all employers to cover the costs of contraception, sterilization, and abortifacient drugs, has incensed religious leaders across the spectrum.
Critics have pointed out that the mandate’s “religious employer” exemption is limited only to institutions serving primarily members of their own sect, a definition experts called dramatically narrower than any other in the history of federal conscience laws.
“Jesus himself, or the Good Samaritan of his famous parable, would not qualify as ‘religious enough’ for the exemption, since they insisted on helping people who did not share their view of God,” Cardinal Daniel Dinardo famously said in a Sept 26 statement. “The ‘religious employer’ exemption offered by the Department is so extremely narrow that it protects almost no one.”
Already Steubenville University in Ohio has announced that it will have to stop offering health insurance because of the HHS mandate, while dozens of other Catholic organizations have filed suit against the mandate.

There's always Choice #3. Stop taking federal money. That's their shoe in the door to tell you what you can and cannot do.
This is blatantly false. Catholic hospitals, schools, and charitable orgainzations could turn down every penny of government money and they would still be subject to Obama’s HHS mandate.
The only exemption is for organizations that only serve members of their own religion. Complying with that would mean Catholics turning their backs on 2,000 years of the Church spreading the gospel by helping those in need.

We need to get the facts right on this site if we're going to have a prayer of fighting against this monster.
So it would be fine to have the law dictate that it's fine and fair to murder infants in the womb but not fair when someone has to pay for abortions and contraceptives.
The argument is that anyone who disagrees can just not take any Federal funds and the problem goes away. What an interesting point of view. Not a Christian point of view, but interesting by way of what it reveals about those who make such an absurd argument. Particularly given that it's based on the false premise that the law only applies to those who take Federal funds.
No, that isn't the argument. I absolutely believe EVERY God-loving, Christ following, pro-life organization SHOULD stand firm and resist the demands of the ungodly federal government. At one time there were such institutions that were PRIVATELY owned and run and the government could NOT mandate what they did or did not do. For example, the Bible college I attended in the seventies was a private college that chose to reject state accreditation because it would allow the state to make demands upon them that would NOT be in the best interest of the college. Had they relented and taken the carrot, the stick would have been that the state could tell them what they could and could not teach, who could teach, etc. They decided it wasn't worth it.
I do not know what the rules are now for such things but it would seem that by taking federal funds, you are opening yourself up to whatever THEY demand. Just like other countries that get American foreign aid, it is used as a bargaining tool to get them to do what America wants and the removing of such aid is a strong motivator.
That same principle is at work here. Just by being reliant on federal money to stay in operation, binds the organization to the government's whims. I'm glad and proud that these groups have refused to buckle and are putting up a strong fight and I join then in that battle. But, if it comes down to the Catholic hospitals either closing or performing abortions, shouldn't they rather close before letting the government force them to do things against the moral conscience of the people? I sincerely hope it doesn't come down to this and that Obama and his cronies give up under crushing opposition, but they should be prepared if it doesn't go down that way. It may very well mean they have to close if they cannot operate without government assistance.
