That was handled very well by Luther’s debate with Eurasmus in BONDAGE OF THE WILL, summed up in his passage XVIII. On the comfort of knowing that salvation does not depend on free-will.
Eurasmus’ responses were very similar to Arminus’s later doctrines followed by the Remonstrants, Methodists, Nazarines, CofCs, Catholics, while Luther’s were more like Calvin’s later doctrines, although Calvin did modify some of his hard line beliefs between writing the Institutes and commentaries.
