Addressing his large, mostly black congregation on Sunday morning, the Rev. Wallace Charles Smith did not mince words about where he stood on President Barack Obama's newly announced support for same-sex marriage: The church is against it, he said, prompting shouts of "Amen!" from the pews.
And yet Smith hardly issued a full condemnation of the president.
"We may disagree with our president on this one issue," Smith said from the pulpit of the Shiloh Baptist Church here. "But we will keep him lifted up in prayer. ... Pray for President Barack Obama."
And Smith said there were much bigger challenges facing the black community -- "larger challenges that we have to struggle with" -- bringing his full congregation to its feet, with many more "amen"s.
Days after Obama announced his personal support for same-sex marriage, pastors across the country offered their Sunday-morning opinions on the development, with the words of black pastors -- a key base of support for Obama in 2008, that is also largely opposed to gay marriage -- carrying special weight in a presidential election year.
But black pastors were hardly monolithic in addressing Obama's remarks.
In Baltimore, Emmett Burns, a politically well-connected black minister who said he supported Obama in 2008, held an event at Rising Sun Baptist Church to publicly withdraw support from the president over Obama's same-sex marriage support...

Obama could support slavery, and these lemmings would seriously buy some books on the best cotton harvesting techniques.
And in votes! Isn't that right, Reverend?
Did these black pastors express their views on Romney’s advocacy of gay couples adopting children?
In other words, we’re against black marriage, but we’ll go to the polls and vote for it.
Amen, Bro!
We must remember what the most issue for Obama’s Black supporters is: “He be Black...YO!
“We must remember what the most issue for Obamas Black supporters is: He be Black...YO!”

It is pathetic that the huge majority of black voters, probably at least 90%, consider only the color of the candidate’s skin when it comes to marking their ballots.
Well, we have a Mormon Bishop, of a royal family of the original founders of a polygamous cult of which he is a prominent leader and representitive, that threw out the biblical definition of “one man, one woman” as wrong, and unbiblical.
He will be defending our position, I hope that he is not asked any awkward questions regarding how his church leadership met the challenges of the Christian opposition to their pro-redefining marriage arguments.
And those 90 % don’t realize that hussein is white just like his mother.

...This one was too easy to call.
I agree. Here in SC Rep. Clyburn has endorsed Obama’s statement on Gay Marriage but even with the church going black bible belt he will get re-elected with no less than 70%. I don’t even think a Republican is running in his district.......
Who is against black marriage?
Not to be nit-picky.... but King Solomon had 700 wives. And was greatly favored by God (at least for awhile).
Picture the Titanic, its sinking.
First Class gets first dibs on the lifeboats, then Second Class.
Historically what then happens to the Steerage Class?
Now introduce the Gay Class, do they get off the ship first or do they go down?
IOW, "smooch, smooch, we'll kiss the butt of King Barry no matter what he does because we love King Barry more than Jesus Christ".
It's about time people stop believing the propaganda about how most black folks are deeply religious and care about Christianity. MLK was about the last black activist that actually cared about Christ as much as he cared about social programs. If the truth were known, he was probably shot for being a Republican that wouldn't play ball with the democrat fascists rather than for being a civil rights activist.
That isn’t nit-picky, it is irrelevant, unless you think the bible does tell us that marriage is to be polygamous not a man and a woman.
Most of the black reverends are bought and paid for, they’ll deliver the sheep.
