Between 17 and 20 April in Harissa, fifty bishops will be debating the themes of Christian-inspired communication and information

Fifty bishops from the Middle East are currently gathered in Beirut to talk about mass media. The discussion is being held by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, from 17 to 20 April in Harissa, the Marian shrine on a hill just a few kilometres from the Lebanese capital. The theme “Communication as a means of evangelization, dialogue, and peace in the Middle East” will be discussed by participants along with the President of the Vatican Congregation, Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, and many experts such as the director of Italian Jesuit magazine Civiltà Cattolica, Fr. Antonio Spadaro, who is very knowledgeable about social networks, which play such an important role in the changes occurring throughout the Middle East.

It is no coincidence that the meeting is taking place in Lebanon. The Land of the Cedars is indeed the best place to understand the extent to which the challenge of communication is a priority for the churches of the Middle East. Beirut is the cultural capital of the region, but also the city which, in the district of Fatka, houses the headquarters of Noursat, the Arabic Catholic satellite channel. But this is no small local broadcaster. From a twenty-five thousand square meter citadel of studios and offices, this television network broadcasts 24 hours a day, not just to the Middle East and North Africa, but also to the diaspora of Arab Christian communities now living in Europe, the United States, Latin America, and Australia. It also manages the website www.noursat.tv, which streams its TV programs. And there is also a sister channel, Nour El Shabab, designed to appeal particularly to younger audiences. In short, it looks very much like a Catholic....
