None would dispute that molesting a child is evil.

How is the love of money the root, or even a twig, of that evil?

Raping a women? Beating your wife? Flying a passenger jet into a skyscraper? Poisoning your neighbor's dog?

Some translations have this passage as " the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil" which is probably more accurate to the authors intention. Not that every single evil is motivated by the love of money but that many evils are motivated by that sin.
