Barack Obama has a curious idea about the way freedom of religion is supposed to work.
He mandates that everyone should be forced to provide services and funding that a significant percentage of the population finds morally objectionable.
Then he backpedals and suggests that some institutions, such as the Catholic Church, be exempted from those requirements.
That approach has nothing to do with the notion of freedom of religion as the Founding Fathers viewed it when they specifically safeguarded it in the First Amendment.
Freedom of religion is supposed to be a personal matter of conscience. It is an individual guarantee, not a protection for government-recognized institutions. Collectivists like Obama don’t appreciate that.
But, more to the point, Obama’s notion of liberty is, as usual, completely backward.
Government has no business mandating individuals, corporations or organizations to buy anything – morally objectionable or not.
Here’s how a free nation is supposed to work.
If people see an urgent need to provide the public with “free contraception, free sterilizations and free abortions,” why don’t they get together and start an organization to give away these services? I’m sure they could find abortionists to provide pro bono services. I’m sure they could find doctors who will provide free neuter and spay services to humans the way many vets do. I’m sure they could find companies who manufacture contraceptives willing to donate their products.
That’s the way a free society once worked.
When churches decided to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, they didn’t go to the federal government to force all Americans to participate in their act of compassion. They just fed the hungry and clothed the naked.
Likewise, wouldn’t it make sense for the church of secular humanists, whose high calling is the destruction of human life and the

A well educated, Christian nation would have long ago slammed the door shut on the infiltraters who are now ensconced in our public schools, secondary schools, university and academia.
Even today, what voter complains about the little school down the block?
What candidates of ours even recognize, let alone MENTION the socialist/Marxist indoctrinational state of American schools?
We the People have taken at least a 50 year nap.
We the People have fallen out of the Christian faith but for nominal conscienceness ourselves.
We the People have ignored the absence of history in our schools, so that all that we no longer know, or what we have forgotten can be repeated, out of utter ignorance.
Classical education has been shoved off the cliff in favor of an endless list of you-know-what. Ritalin became cool for boys denied recesses, etc., etc.
How’s that working out?
Still, we are silent, with generations of the same pap education coming at us, while we wonder why we are imploding as a nation.

Here I would add that while the choice of religion is a personal matter, the exercise of religion, once it has been chosen, does not have to be done on an individual basis; neither is it a private matter. Any politician should be free to say: "I am affiliated with ____ religion and if elected I will look for guidance in its tenets".
One of the greatest damage John F. Kennedy did to America's freedom was his "my Catholicism is my private matter" speech. "Yuk" (quoting Santorum), indeed.
