Moscow, February 8, Interfax - Prime Minister Vladimir Putin promised on Wednesday it would be one of the tasks of Russia's foreign policy to defend Christians in other countries who are persecuted for their faith.

"You needn't have any doubt that that's the way it will be," Putin said at a meeting with Russian religious leaders when Metropolitan Hilarion, foreign relations chief of the Russian Orthodox Church, expressed hope that Russia's government would stand up for persecuted Christian communities abroad.

He's going to be busy if he's serious about this.

I certainly admire the sentiment, and in the face of rising Islamism and increased persecution of Christians, I hope he’s being honest and not just playing politics of some sort.

What he’s proposing is what this world needs. Not necessarily to “protect Christians”, but someone to stand up to Islamism.

His intention is to defend Arabic speaking Christians in Syria ~ by keeping Bashar al Assad in power.

Remember, Syria is a Moslem majority country, but the political power is held by the Alawi who keep in power with extreme brutality.

The Christians have been allied with the Alawi for centuries.

Recall the little battle the other day in Homs? The Syria army was firing artillery shells at civilian areas and then beheading and mutilating the dead? The fairly large Christian Arab community in Indianapolis are descended mostly from people who FLED HOMS to escape that particularly nasty bunch of Moslems when they moved in from Anatolia proper at the termination of the Ottoman Empire in WWI.

Mitch Daniels probably has mix mixed feelings over this one ~

Putin, of course, is currying the favor of the Russian Orthodox in Russia by rushing to the aid of the current Christian protector in Syria.

Christians need to study the situation carefully. Putin is taking the traditional position against the Moslems by supporting any dictator who is not a Moslem but who has a large allied Christian minority.

He is, in fact, siding with Christians against Moslems.

Obama will take the opposite course and side with the Moslems against the Christians.

Both Putin and Obama will do so out of personal political concerns and ideology ~ but in this issue Putin is the one on the Christian side. Our government is not.

good write-up. Unfortunately Assad is the best choice for Christians (and for Israelis) in Syria — the alternative is horrifying for both Israel and the Syrian Christians

He can start by helping us vote the Malignancy-in-Chief out of office.

Russians are in the process of building 200 new Christian churches in and around Moscow. Whose side do you think God is most likely to be on??

“Prime Minister Vladimir Putin promised on Wednesday it would be one of the tasks of Russia’s foreign policy to defend Christians in other countries who are persecuted for their faith.”

That’s great. However, what about Christians(specifically though not limited to non-Eastern Orthodox ones) who are persecuted in Russia for their faith?

You gotta love a guy who allows himself to be term-limited as president, installs his own guy to be the (newly) ceremonial head of state, and installs himself as Prime Minister. No term limits there!

I like Putin. Always have. I think I know what Bush meant when he said he could see into his soul. It means you can count on Vlad Putin to do what is in the national interest of Russia. Period. No big secret. Sometimes his interest is in opposition to ours, but it seems to me that Russia’s position is always clear.

Ay Gawd, I do believe you’re right. After coming in and taking over after the crash of the empire, he took a broken country, and now, has Russia EVER had this long of a period of peace and, I have to assume, relative plenty? I rather doubt it.
