My former Catholic parish in Arizona cancelled its regular Sunday night teen religious education classes when the Cardinals played in the 2009 Super Bowl. The parish still had its regular 5pm Sunday Mass, but my wife told me there were only a handful of people there, given the 4:30pm MST Super Bowl start time. It wasn’t that big a deal to push back a class, especially when classes are cancelled during school breaks anyway.

My sister’s church has services in the AM on Superbowl Sunday and then a potluck dinner in the evening with a rented giant-sized big screen TV to watch the game on. Most of the congregation shows up to watch the game and socialize.

It’s proven to be very popular, many people come in the morning and don’t go home until after the game.

The pastors take on it is that events like this build a strong community in the church (they do a ton of community work too, it’s not all parties).
