"Oh Come Let Us Adore Him," a display of more than 100 creches, Nativities and angels, is being held this weekend at the Connellsville Presbyterian Church, in conjunction with "It's A Connellsville Christmas." The hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

"We are pleased that we get so many new pieces to add each year. We like to make changes and create new arrangements each holiday. New this year, we are adding a Christmas tree to hang the many little Nativity ornaments on. It will look beautiful," said Teri Montgomery, event co-coordinator along with Nancy Luckey. Other committee members include Shirley Rusnack and the Rev. Suzanne Zampella. This is the fourth year for the display.

I had to look up what a Creche was...basically the nativity scene...

A nativity scene, manger scene, krippe, crèche... is a depiction of the birth of Jesus as described in the gospels of Matthew and Luke.

Definition of CRÈCHE

1: a representation of the Nativity scene
2: day nursery
3: a foundling hospital
4: a group of young animals (as penguins or bats) gathered in one place for care and protection usually by one or more adults

Did you ever notice that in most art Jesus is a helpless infant in His mothers lap .

One would think that Presbyterians, being Calvinists, would eschew nativity displays.

Thanks for posting those. I saw the Siena Cathedral in December, 1961--almost a half century ago.

Completely biblical:

"Christ Jesus, Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross." (Philippians 2: 5-8)

"And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him; and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh." (Matthew 2: 11)

I collect them. Vintage ones

Not all kinds, not the cute ones or the ones that use dogs as people.

I like the ones with integrity. I cannot tell you exactly what it means, but I know it when I see it.

My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm:
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Magníficat ánima mea Dóminum,
et exsultávit spíritus meus
in Deo salvatóre meo,
quia respéxit humilitátem
ancíllæ suæ.

Ecce enim ex hoc beátam
me dicent omnes generatiónes,
quia fecit mihi magna,
qui potens est,
et sanctum nomen eius,
et misericórdia eius in progénies
et progénies timéntibus eum.
Fecit poténtiam in bráchio suo,
dispérsit supérbos mente cordis sui;
depósuit poténtes de sede
et exaltávit húmiles.
Esuriéntes implévit bonis
et dívites dimísit inánes.
Suscépit Ísrael púerum suum,
recordátus misericórdiæ,
sicut locútus est ad patres nostros,
Ábraham et sémini eius in sæcula.

Glória Patri et Fílio
et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio,
et nunc et semper,
et in sæcula sæculórum.

Amen.

She became the Mother of God, in which work so many and such great good things are bestowed on her as pass man’s understanding. For on this there follows all honor, all blessedness, and her unique place in the whole of mankind, among which she has no equal, namely, that she had a child by the Father in heaven, and such a Child . . . Hence men have crowded all her glory into a single word, calling her the Mother of God . . . None can say of her nor announce to her greater things, even though he had as many tongues as the earth possesses flowers and blades of grass: the sky, stars; and the sea, grains of sand. It needs to be pondered in the heart what it means to be the Mother of God.

(Commentary on the Magnificat, 1521; in Luther’s Works, Pelikan et al, vol. 21, 326)

This depiction of Jesus seems to me to most accurately reflecty the imprints of blood on the Shroud of Turin.
Amazing.

I agree with you.
I visited the Church of Dormition, in Jerusalem (Abbey of the Dormition) where Mary's death is commemorated.
Below in the crypt, where she was said to have breathed her last, is a mosaic of Mary wrapped like a baby and carried to heaven by Jesus. It's so very unusual and therefore memorable.

You can Google the site.

They bring me to prayer for their conversion...

But that aside..consider the psychology behind usually having Jesus as an infant or small child in art ..Children are SUBJECT to their parents and must do as they say.. so this ‘fits” with the view of the King of kings having to obey his momma.. and puts her in the co redeemer seat...

sometimes subtle things do impact us

and that’s the power of God, the “confidence” of God — not in the strong wind or storm, but in a whisper
