Coptic Orthodox may pull children from Toronto Catholic schools (Catholic / Orthodox Caucus)

Concerned that Toronto Catholic schools will adopt a policy promoting tolerance of homosexuality, a Coptic Orthodox priest is calling upon parents to consider withdrawing their children from the schools.

“In these young grades, we don’t want teachers talking about God creating Adam and Steve,” said Father Jeremiah Attaalla, who ministers at Ti Agia Maria and St. Demiana Coptic Orthodox Church in west Toronto. “It’s Adam and Eve.”

“Our members do not want gay-straight alliance groups in our Catholic schools,” added the priest, who says that 4,000 Coptic Orthodox children attend the schools. “We will pull our children from the Catholic schools if they go ahead with it.”

Some Coptic Orthodox laity have taken issue with Father Attaala’s comments. Reporting on the controversy, the most popular newspaper in Canada glossed over the theological differences between Catholics and Coptic Orthodox (who do not accept the Christological formulations of the Council of Chalcedon), ignored major differences in liturgy; and a˜ppeared to make the ridiculous claim the Catholics believe that the Pope is not a human being, but a “divine figure.” The Toronto Star reported that

though most in the Coptic Orthodox community send their children to Catholic school, they are not Catholic themselves. The differences are slight--they use the same liturgies, though Orthodox Christians differ from Roman Catholics in their belief that the Pope is a human being, not a divine figure--which has meant Coptic Orthodox children most often are sent to Catholic school.

Gads, what is going through the tiny minds of the Canadian bishops that they are even permitting these “gay alliance” clubs and “anti-homophobia” activities in Catholic schools? That’s insane.

I know they’re under a lot of pressure in Canada because of Canadian “hate speech” and anti-discrimination laws, but surely there’s a better way to handle it than this.

I would withhold judgment until I found out what the Catholic policy actually is. It's apparent thst the Toronto Star has published imbecilities concerning Catholic doctrines; it's likely they've publshed imbecilities about Catholic school policies as well.

Hunh?

“...Orthodox Christians differ from Roman Catholics in their belief that the Pope is a human being, not a divine figure...”

I have Greek Orthodox in the family and as far as I know, that’s not the issue.

Anyway, Catholics don’t see the pope as divine. That’s a crazy statement.

Yeah I just caught that.

The Torstar is a liberal rag, whose support in the last election passed from the leftist Liberal Party (think Democrats) to the far left New Democratic Party (think Communists).

When was the last time that the far left got anything correct about the Church?

ABSOLUTELY ~ I think the Toronto Star would be among the last places I'd go for commentary on Catholic beliefs and policies, and particularly Coptic beliefs and policies.

Interesting that Canada has now decided that it is a good idea to resume persecuting Captic Christians.

One of those "last days" things I am sure.

"...Roman Catholics in their belief that the Pope is a human being, not a divine figure..."

The fact that the "journalist" could actually write that down speaks volumes, doesn't it?

“Catholic schools” in Canada receive government money and are basically like public schools with a Catholic flavor to them. It’s not like in the U.S., where Catholic schools receive almost no government money, and what little they do receive can only be remuneration for stuff that the government schools would do for those students anyway.
