From abolitionists to gay rights activists: Geneva's Unitarian remains bastion of liberal ministry

Gays and lesbians seeking a spiritual journey through organized faith might find several roadblocks in society, especially with media focus on the anti-gay stances of many churches, but one woman found a welcoming congregation in Geneva.

Pamela Rumancik, 49, who’s openly lesbian, recently finished a year of training as a minister at Geneva’s Unitarian Universalist Church. Her role was assistant minister, leading services and performing weddings and memorial services.

Rumancik grew up Catholic and was always involved with the church.

“I couldn’t be a minister in the Catholic Church, but I could as a Unitarian,” she said.

..“As a Catholic, I was totally repressed so much,” Rumancik said. “I really didn’t notice (I was a lesbian) until I got older.”

“Hate is not the message of the Bible,” Rumancik said. “Jesus said nothing about gay people. (They’re) just picking and choosing what supports (their) own prejudices.”

A passage in the Old Testament in the Book of Leviticus describes men lying with each other as an abomination. Bates countered by pointing out that passages in the Old Testament also seem to condone slavery.

“It was written for people thousands of years ago, which is not necessarily a good guide for today,” Bates said.

it's interesting how the gays try to link the ending of discrimination based on skin color to the "gay rights"

And it's good this lady left to become a biblical Unitarian

One more example of a “biblical unitarian”. Old Reggie — how do Unitarians like your group justify their junking of the bible?

From the article: “...the anti-gay stances of many churches.”

Christians are not anti-gay so much as anti-sin. There’s a vital distinction between the two that many folks simply fail to grasp.

So-called pastor Bates said, “It (the Bible) was written for people thousands of years ago, which is not necessarily a good guide for today.”

So why bother being a Christian at all if one is willing to ignore Christ’s teachings?

Bates: “Jesus said nothing about gay people.”

Christ didn’t specifically mention gay people, but He did cover the topics of sin and repentence quite well. The apostles who had first-hand knowledge of Christ’s teachings DID write about homosexuality, fornication, adultery and a slew of other sexual and non-sexual sins. Early church leaders who didn’t know Christ directly but were able to interact with the apostles also knew homosexuality was a sin. Only a seriously deluded “Christian” could possibly believe unrepentant homosexuality is OK, and a “Christian” leader who teaches such heresy is even worse than an unbeliever.

One more thing, so-called pastor Bates. As a “Christian,” you should agree Christ had no problem standing up to religious and government authorities when they defied God’s will, right? If so, why didn’t Christ pick a mix of female and male apostles? I mean, if He wanted to make a point about doing what’s right, why no female apostles? Hint: because women are not supposed to be put in charge of Christ’s church.

Couldn’t have said it better. How did Meredith Baxter and George Takei NOT know they were gay until they were senior citizens? And Meredith Baxter had kids. Wasn’t she “repulsed” by having sex with her husband all those years? I mean, you could put the handsomest man in the world in front of me and I still wouldn’t want to sleep with him.

Meredith Baxter was married 3 times with 5 kids. After some time when one gets used to the idea of multiple partners, why not one of the same sex?

"gay marriage" has its roots in "free love"

I have to start this by saying that I am not a fan of Oprah.
Do not watch her show, but in the break room at work, her show was on the TV.

She was looking back at some of her old shows and doing a “Where are they now?” thing.

An interview with Fran Dreschler and her ex husband was on.
They were discussing their divorce. It seems that, though they had been together since high school, he is gay and decided he couldn’t live as a straight man anymore.

Oprah asked about their sex life. Both said that it was good throughout their marriage. They had a couple of kids.

I cannot understand how it is, if he was/is gay, how could he have been sexually aroused by her? How did they have a good sex life?

It all makes no sense to me.

Ah, so does the pic mean that Unitarians don’t even justify their junking of the Bible, they just throw it out?

Thanks for further elucidation of the proof that Unitarians don’t even feel like justify their junking of the Bible, they just throw out the Bible wholesale, so the entire “biblical unitarians” story is about the Unitarian junking of the entire bible...

The pic, loosely translated, means UU is off limits to criticism; this forum is for criticizing Catholicism only.

It’s the ultimate invisible glass house.

Exactly -- talk of hypocrisy! The Biblical Unitarians won't even comment on what they themselves believe or rather the crazy stuff they believe (everything and nothing), yet spend their entire time criticizing Catholicism.

it's like a massive case of envy -- envy that we have faith in Jesus Christ while they just don't....

in fact if you'll notice, the biblical UUs are ashamed of their cult and don't even talk about it, or what they believe or don't believe either as a cult or as individuals.

What a sad sad bunch of losers who can only focus on attacking Christians rather than on God...
