I believe that there are other versions which go back to the original text and actually translate from them.
That would be all of them, except the old Living Bible and Peterson's The Message.
That said - I don't particularly care for the NIV either.
Aspects of it have bothered me. Putting "sinners" in quotes in the NT. The intent is to point to it not being used in an expected way. It reads like these "sinners" really aren't. And, replacing "flesh" with "sinful nature".
"ESV preferred", myself.
I like the ESV as well. :)
